Freelander 1 Tank lift pump: '06 TD4... maybe ok?

Quick question, very easy for anyone else with a similar age TD4 to answer. I couldn't find in the archives.

Scenario: I turn the key to position II, ready to start engine. The lift pump in the tank runs.....and runs and runs. It doesn't stop. Is this normal operation?

Obviously I usually start the engine as soon as I'm ready, and drive away. Drive is fine/normal (I wouldn't know any different).

Every other car I've had with a pump in the tank, in this scenario, lets the pump run and then it cuts out (probably when a given pressure is reached in the fuel line) if the engine is not started.

What does yours do? And if mine is wrong, where is the fault likely to be?

I don’t see any problem. The pump will run for almost a minute then stop if you don’t start the engine.

The pump is near the rear the wheel arch not in the tank.

As above.
A late TD4 only has a low pressure fuel pump behind the o/s wheel arch. It will run on ignition to prime the high pressure pump in the engine bay.
If it is getting noticeably noisier, that is an indication that it might be on the way out.
They are quite easy to replace (along with the filter at the same time). If you do replace, buy a good quality one, not a cheap one, otherwise you’ll be doing it again next year

In the car you certainly ear the pump relay.

It not because you ear the pump that the pump is in the way out.

Only if the pump is making too much noise.
Should make less noise than a portable cooler.
