As a new member I have rarely used the 110 off road and would welcome some advice on basics. Most likely use will be boat launching/recovery on firm sandy beach. The printed advisory on diff lock engagement on the fusebox cover is worn out on mine, so could someone talk through the procedure and advise on what to do? I am figuring that if it is firm sand then diff lock may not be needed at all, but if so then low second would be a good place to start. What's the knack of engagement? I do not want to make a prat of myself first time out and let the Landy name down! I am a bit worried that if it has not been used in anger for some time that the diff lock will "stick" on as it did some time ago when engaged by accident (at least the diff lock warning light failed to go off at first!)

Yes - I know - enrol on an off road course! Would love to - any good ones in Lancashire?

Cheers

The warning sign says :-

WARNING

THE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK SHOULD ONLY BE ENGAGED WHEN TRACTION
IS LIKELY TO BE LOST. WIDE THROTTLE OPENING SHOULD BE AVOIDED
WHEN USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH 1st AND 2nd GEAR LOW RANGE.
AS SOON AS THE DIFFICULT SURFACE HAS BEEN CROSSED THE
DIFFERENTIAL LOCK MUST BE RELEASED.
A SINGLE AXLE ROLLER RIG MAY BE USED FOR SPEEDS UP TO 5km/h.
THE CENTRE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK MUST BE DISENGAGED FOR ROLLER
TESTS OVER 5km/h EITHER ALL FOUR WHEELS MUST BE ROTATED AT
THE SAME SPEED OR IF ONLY A SINGLE AXLE ROLLER RIG IS AVAILABLE,
THE CENTRE DIFFERENTIAL MUST BE LOCKED AND THE PROPELLER
SHAFT TO STATIONARY AXLE MUST BE REMOVED.

LAND ROVER LIMITED MTC 5227

It is not abnormal for the warning light to stay on after the deselecting difflock, as the switch and gear is operated by a spring loaded sliding dog and will only release and engage when the gears are lined up.

Just bung it in in nuetral (it will go in while on the move, but probably best avoided). If you use diff lock when it's not needed the diffs may suffer from "wind up" I've not suffered this so can't comment.

The man whose never made a prat of himself is a lieing ****.

And I wouldn't worry to much about letting the Landy name down they did it themselves when they produced the Gaylander.

Cheers Grunt - I had a laugh at the last line! Keep your eye on the press for a 110 stranded on the beach at Abersoch! Should be fine - will take a shovel and waffle boards in case. :)
