Anyone done the swivel seals the easy way i.e. without removing the whole lot, what is required for this and what does it entail.

Undo the bolts around the seal prise old seal out if you've oil in there it'll come out now if its grease it may stay there cut the new seal on one side that will end at the very top cut the soft inner bit with a sharp knife cleanly as it needs to be a neat cut to re seal with super glue, cut the hard outter bit with the hacksaw and bend it, feed it around the swivel like putting a key on a keyring bend the seal back into shape and super glue the top refit seal retainer top up if required and the jobs a good un nb the seal retainer stays on just undo it and slide it along will give enough room...hope this helps cartman690...:D

dont cut the seal!!!! it'll leak, super glue isn't water proof and what about the spring in the seal thats designed to hold the seal tight to the ball?

If yer gonna do it, do it properly.

Take the brake caliper off, take the track rod off, undo the bolts that hold the hub assembly to the axle tube then pull the whole lot off the axle. sit the hub in the wheel and you can work on it quite easlily, undo the ring of 8mm bolts, take the ring off, prise the seal out, new seal in and refit it all back up. Easy!!!!

it'll take less time doing that than faffing around and wrecking the seal then doing it again cos it ****ed out.

I totally agree - and usually by the time it needs seals the swivel bearings are shagged and need doing as well.

Cheers all.

Yes they are a bit... are they MOT failable?

I need to get the force of the swivel pull back calibrated don't I?

yup its susposed to be 6lbs at 6 inches from the center but you can use the hole in the arm .. unless you have done lots of them then you can do it by feel.

they are if it leaks grease onto the brakes

oh and play in the swivels will fail too

On that topic, can you replace the brake guards without taking the lot apart, i.e. does that NEED to be done while swivels are off, I might just get the swivels, after all I need to get ready for France next year!

I think I've bin slateted here. all I can say it was a quick fix for an mot yeah the proper way is to strip it all down proper but this was for a quick fix after an mot fail the garage wanted a hidious amount for the repair. the family was waiting to go on holiday and I fixed it quick and they didn't leak for the 3 years and 30,00 miles I put on it on and off road...the guy asked how to do it and I told him...I'm goin for a sulk now in the corner. I'll be back when I'm forgiven... about 10 mins...cartman690...

Nah don't worry, I am going to use that plan because I don't have time and need a quick fix, for the sake of 2 seals if it lasts a few months I will be pleased.

Cheers all.
