There's some play on both LH & RH swivels on my 1971 109. I've studied the manual & I'm hoping to get away with a quick-fix by removing shims as necessary. Have I got a reasonable chance of success? Or does free play usually indicate the need for new top & bottom bearings, in other words a thorough overhaul ?
On a related issue, has anyone out there replaced a steering idler box ? I've heard dark rumours about difficulties in persuading the box out of its tight fit in the chassis. Is it really that bad ?
Any advice much appreciated.

I would give the swivels a good overhaul, and then they are done, cos they arnt nice to mes about with.

As for the steering relay, you will need a big hammer.

ferk that !!! take a shim out!! ,
after all thats what they are there for.
if yer bearings feel lumpy or uneven then change them but not just fer the sake of it. too much work if you dint need to do it.
ah mean its not like changing a release bearing while doing a clutch where you already have it stripped down far enought to do it and the cost int that much more.
where as takin a him out costs nowt but new bearings cost money and require a **** load more work to change.

ave nevva had any trouble getting steering relays out ....yet.. just used to old jack method and they pop out
