swivel pin rebuild kits question

Right - time has come to replace the swivel housings and bits at the front.

The swivel rebuild kits I see online all contain 1 swivel pin. But am I right in saying each side has an upper and lower pin.

Is there a reason only 1 is supplied with the kits?

Just wondering before I start as dont want to come unstuck halfway through.

Anybody know???
 
Im not 100 percent but Iirc they either have top rialko or a roller bearing at the top as well as the bottom, Maybe change over from 10 to 24 spline?
My 93 rollers top and bottom, mates 93 rialko top.
 
I've just done mine so I've got some idea what's needed. The kits you can buy are for the top bearing only, and comprise an outer race (to tap into the top bearing hole in the ball), a set of rollers, a pin (the rollers bear directly on the pin, it doesn't have a separate inner race), a selection of shims and an O ring. As James says, for the bottom you want a 60666 on each side. I ordered new bottom pins for mine too, just in case the old ones were worn.

The Railko bush was used as a top bearing on earlier models. My parts list says 'to (V) KA930455'

The bottom bearing actually takes the weight of the car and the top bearing is there to hold it steady. So it was just a plain bearing from the old Series models to about 1993 or so.

Worth stocking up on all the seals, gaskets, nuts and bolts you'll need too!

I assume the kits come with all the gaskets needed? Or is this a no?

Is it handy enough job? I've previously stripped down to the ball to replace cv but not the housing.
 
I ended up ordering gaskets separately. They're typically only pocket money prices and I'm past the age at which it is fun to cut them out of gasket paper. I got a new gasket for the bottom pin, a new ball-to-axle tube gasket, and a new one for where the stub axle fits the outer swivel housing. I also changed the big rubber seals that go between the outer housing and the chrome ball, seeing as it is a good idea to get at them at this point whilst everything is apart. The top pin doesn't have a gasket, just shims. It's not immersed in oil or grease like the bottom one so is unlikely to leak. it does have a rubber o ring that comes in the kit, but the old ones had no trace of an o ring and they were OK for 66000 miles.

It starts with the back axle but keep going and you'll get to the front one.

Surely Britpart cant get gaskets wrong can they??? If they are that bad then how on earth do they still remain as a household name in Landrover parts?

Every Land Rover supplier I have spotted online or called into locally have loads of Britpart stuff.

Funny though I ordered some series conversion doors from sp landrovers and although the doors are ok, the heavy duty hinge set they supplied is Britpart and I am not sure if I should use them or not as everywhere I look somebody is saying NOOOOOOOOOOOOO to Britpart stuff.

Must say - they have a rough as old boots finish to them with the odd gash in the metal here and there.

britpart wholesale a range of parts from genuine through branded to cheap pattern its up to you which you buy
 
To be honest even genuine hinges have a kind of rough orangey peal type finish to them.
Guess it's just the way they're cast.
