Hi everyone, it’s a 300tdi 1995 90 & I need to replace the inner swivel housing gasket as it’s weeping grease, so can I get away with unbolting the swivel hub at the axle & pulling it off with the half shaft , so I can get away with having to disturb the wheel bearing & swivel housing?
& if I can do do I need to replace the bolts holding the housing to the axle or can I reuse + 720 loctite
Cheers

That is the way I do it if other parts in good order. When out I lower the hub swivel unit back into the wheel laid flat on the ground, holds it nice for seal change. Extra hands to get them back is good, more so the long shaft.

It's more likely to be that the swivel ball will be damaged (worn, pitted etc) which in turn wears the seal.
To get everything back to 100% i'd reccommend that you change the whole lot, bearings, seals everything.

If you have any sort of lift there are castor corrected kits.

Look up part # DA3203 and #DA3178.
If you do go the Blue box route change the bearings for Timken brand rather than those supplied.
Your Defender will love you....

One of mine went to leak recently, no issue with the ball housing but found a bit of water had got into the back of the seal and rotted the seal spring until it gave way.

An older style mechanic told me years ago to make sure to pack the spring channel with grease before assembling to protect the spring from water
