Swivel bolt sizes

Good afternoon,

Just in the process of changing my swivel seals on the 300tdi.
What size are the bolts that fix the swivel to the axle? and the seal retainer bolts.

I know you can buy the bolts but want to put some normal headed bolts on.

I'd be highly cautious about substituting the swivel bolts, they are designed for a purpose and that purpose is effectively holding your front wheels on your vehicle!! Those bolts also act as dowel bolts to hold the swivel at the correct trail angle (not that there would be much slack to move them anyway). There is nothing wrong with the standard bihex bolts, just replace them with new ones and they will be fine for another 10/15 years.

I suspect the op is not using the correct size socket and it's slipping on the head of the bolt?
Been there done that, got the proper socket now .

I think you're very lucky to be able to get a socket on - the ball is usually in the way. I crack them off with a ring spanner and a few taps with a hammer, and then a ratchet ring spanner to spin them out.

Interestingly, that parts list in the link above does identify some hex head bolts (FTC3456) for the purpose. So there may still be some Land Rover approved hex ones around.

Aahh..yes...I'm thinking of the caliper bolts, same type but accessible with a socket.

When I have the need to do mine I will probably use the ring spanner / hammer method to remove but to correctly torque the new bolts (note I said new!) this is what you need (from memory they are 14mm). Snap-on rate the adaptor to 1050 in-lb (87.5 lbf/ft) and the actual torque loading for the bolts is 54lbf/ft so well within its capabilities but probably not enough to remove old seized ones.

And if anyone does use that style of adaptor be aware that you need to set the torque wrench to a lower setting than the nominal 54lbf/ft due to the extra length of the adaptor. To work out what that should be see here, you will overtighten the bolts if you set the wrench to 54lbf/ft.

bolts are m10 for swivel and m6 for seal retainer ,but you need the proper bolt for swivel

14mm spanner should get em off but they may be 5/8"

I've seen them that rusty that they need to have the heads cut off with a grinder

9/16 is 14 ml. i welded a old jack handle to 14 ml ring spanner for leverage bloody tight to the end of bolt

i have a defender puma 2.4 engine management light comes on for a week or so then goes off for a month or so ecg fault but no difference in performence ..?
