Can anyone advise what access you get when removing sump cover plate. Can big ends be changed via this plate or is there too much metal underneath it ?!

Any photos would be great.

What engine?
The sump is removable with the sump guard off. So as long as it's not a V6, you can get to the bottom of the engine.
You can't get to the bearings of the V6 from underneath.

TD4 and K 1.8 should be fine though;)

You won't be able to change the big end bearings when the engine is still bolted up to the gearbox - or at least I don't think you can: the picture above shows the bottom half of the crank carrier still in place - it is part of the engine's "sandwich" construction - so this layer also needs to be dropped to get at the crank bearings. You can just about see the crank in the shadows in that image above (nice picture htr!)

Tricky. I'd say that this would be an engine-out job. Not too difficult when the engine is out of the car, but a biggish one as you can imagine.

Yes you can. Big ends are very easy from below. Main bearings need the engine to be removed;)

Thanks guys - it is a TD4 - should have said that - is it still possible !?!?! RAVE shows a load of metal work under the sump cover - but it is a bad photo !

Thanks, Just to be clear, I don't mean the fibreboard sump 'guard' - I mean under the sump base plate (fitted to the sump itself) - if I remove this is it clear to the big ends??

The engine is a standard iron design with flat bottom deck. So yes, you can get to the big end bearings from below, once the sump is removed.

Hi There,
I am currently trying to get to the big end bearings on my 2005 Freelander 2.5 V6. I have removed all the 8 bolt securing the sump from below but how do I get to the 2 bolts scoring the sump from the top? Are these two bolts behind the flywheel does the gearbox need to be pulled back?

Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

The sump is held on by 10 bolts. 8 are round the sides and 2 are in hollows that you access from below.
You can't get to the bearings from the sump as the block extension has a reinforced lattice area, blocking access.
The only way to access the bearings is with the engine out of the vehicle and inverted on a stand.
