I've just had the clutch on my Series 3 2 1/4 Diesel let me down.

I got just down the road from my house and suddenly I was unable to select any gears with the engine running and clutch pedal pressed. I had to get home by stopping the engine, putting it into second and not taking it out of gear for the short trip home. I had to do a few more of these stopped engine gear changes to manoeuvre it into place where I ususally park it.

I can select all gears as normal with the engine stopped, so I think it is the clutch rather than the box.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies.

I have just been away for a week and this happened the day before I went, so I haven't had chance to have a look yet.

The first chance I will get to have a look will be this weekend.

I had a look and the cylinder was quite low on fluid.

I topped it up, bled all of the old fluid out, topped it up again and bled the air out.

This has made it slightly better, but not much. I can now just manage to force the gear stick into gear. It is also creeping when it's in gear and the clutch pedal is pressed down.

Am I right that this is a problem with either the master or slave cylinder?

If the master has failed you can usually see the fluid dripping on the cab floor from the pedalbox.
If you press the clutch twice in quick succession does it then engage if so that would suggest air still in system.
But if loosing fluid then you have a leak siome where ,other common fault is the hose on the bulkhead failing internally causing a restriction.

I tried the clutch again today and I was able to select all gears with the engine running.

Sometimes it was more difficult than others to get into gear. I took it for a couple of miles run around the local streets and didn't have any major problems.

I haven't seen any signs of fluid leaking around the pedal or from the slave cylinder. I think the fact that it was low was a case of me never thinking to check it.

However, the pedal does hit the bulkhead when pressed. I will try adjusting the pedal over the weekend if it stops raining.
