Hi all,

My first posting and need a bit of help. Bought a 98 freelander few months back and started to here a sucking noise. If i put my foot on the brakes it stops then comes back with foot off. Sounds like its coming from drivers side

Done a bit of research and could it be brake booster? What is a brake booster and is it the big dish thing on the firewall. What can I check

Thanks to anyone who can help

brake booster also known as brake servo unless yer a septic. boosts the power of yer brakes usually using engine vaccum or vaccum from a vaccum pump. unless its a hydralic one which yours int

sounds like you have a vaccum leak at the break booster("the big dish thing on the firewall"). The booster takes a vaccum from the inlet manifold to assist in brake peddle travel making it easier to apply the brakes. hence "power assited brakes". could be the diaphram or hoses has a hole. a hose is a simple replacment, not sure about the diaphram, someone here will know for sure. check the hose from the manifold to booster for leaks. wait for more, better advice.
good luck
Dylan

on some brake servos you can change the diaphram, but others are a sealed unit, only the factory/agents can change em.

not sure which type the 98 gaylander has.
