dear all,
I have just finnished a complete rebuild on my 2.25l 3 bearing series 2a :confused::confused::confused:petrol engine as follows:
piston rings, all bearing & seals, new valves reground, new weber carb, new distributer, plugs leads and coil, waterpump, fuel pump the lot if ive missed anything it was changed lol.
the timing IS correct, the spark is fantastic, fuel is new, it should start but just splutters a bit, worse with landy air filter fitted, 4 days now and it just wont go.....also compression on all cylinders is perfect (honned out), used carb cleaner with no avail....also checked tappets...spot on...just losing the will to live as all the so called mechanics i know say "it should run" (thanks for that)....if anybody could give me any constructive suggestions i would be forever in your debt. :confused::confused::confused::confused:
 
I'm a bit reluctant to post this as it may make you look stupid if I'm correct but have you re- checked the the rotation of the dizzy arm to make sure the leads are corresponding correctly :behindsofa: just a thought.
 
is it the original engine from the car? if not is it posative earth or negative earth?? is the engine turning over the correct way? could be worth a look

doh id be checking the gravitation pull of the earth against venus, could only be a landy.dont you just hate it when after all that work it still wont work.
2 weeks ago i rebuilt a 200tdi for a weekend laning trip, fitted the engine the day before, the 90 rolled forward with the engine on a hoist over the engine bay and the engine went through the windscreen, got the engine fitted with every problem imaginable, new screen fitted finished at 12.30 am. 330 am set off, 1 hour into trip oil light came on. game over. still havent sorted it

carb not 180 degrees out, was a positive earth changed to neg earth engine runs the right way, timeing spot on....just made a timing light, leads all correct, distributor going right way, manually injected petrol through top of carb still nowt...just a sputter ish as usual....the only thing i did notice is when i was doing the timing with the light it was very vage not very accurate re. points opening and closing...gonna try a bigger gap in points right now...thanks for the replies guys
 
Worth checking that TDC on the ignition stroke on cylinder1 (the one at the front) corresponds to the correct positioning of the rotor arm (usually points to front corner of engine) - ie it's delivering the spark to the correct cylinder. Then make sure the firing order is correct, remembering the dizzy goes anticlockwise. Is it the right cap for the dizzy? Check the quality of the spark - is it strong and blue or weak and yellow? A weak spark could be poorly set points or a duff condenser. (I know it's new..... condensers can be useless straight out of the box and points often need dressing to make the contact faces parallel.) Is the flexible earth lead in the dizzy properly connected? Is the rotor arm properly seated on the dizzy shaft? Is the coil wired the right way round?
 
yeh i checked the drive dog and it was 20' as in manual and the spark is on the compression cycle on piston 1 front of the engine

i have just been trying :violent:again and now i have the timing spot on it sometimes fires out of the top of the carb??? also when i rebuilt the engine i did leave oil in the tops of the pistons due to i now i wouldnt be starting it for a while, took the plugs out and they are quite oily and droplets on them aswell ??? the plot thickens....i really dont want to take the head off again and mop the piston tops :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
 
oil wont hurt ,sounds like weak spark ,is inlet manifold sealed to head its not unkown for people to change gasket to later one piece ,and not slacken 4 bolts holding the 2 manifolds together meanig they wont pull up to head properly
