Hi
can anyone please advise a young friend of mine after spending all his money on a disco, has been off roading and has got hisself stuck in clay mud?? He's in a difficult muddy hilly area to get near and it ain't budging\/
Can anyone help suggest anything that might help?

All suggestions gladly appreciated

1. make sure you dont go out on your own.

2. take recovery equipment.

3. dont go to areas where you feel your vehicle may be ill equiped to adequately deal with these kind of situations.

4. take a mobile so you can call your 4x4 mates to pull you out when your stuck :)

i know someone who flys with the air/sea rescue up your neck - lets have the grid pos (where it is now and where you want it dropping (litterally dropping btw)) and i'll ask him tomorrow to sort it when they get a min or two - does it have a front or rear recovery point ? how big his your garden? - could be an issue if you live in a flat

on a more serious note He'll need ta dig round the wheels and get some scaff planks or similar under the wheels. make sure he's engaged diff lock and he should be able ta drive out.

You will need a very strong pull on a very strong cable.

The question is how to do that.

A four-wheel drive tractor is a good idea - probably the best.

Next is another landy, a winch, and an anchor of some sort.

If there is any space under it, one of those inflatable gas bags that are puffed up by the exhaust pipe would lift it side for side and you could fill in the holes under the tyres.

But best bet is the big tractor. Make up your mind at an early stage which direction to pull it. It might well be better backwards, especially if he has a towbar fitted. It would spread the strain equally to both chassis legs, not just one as would happen using a front towing eye.

Do the recovery VERY slowly. Ask your tractor man PLEASE to use the lowest slowest gear he has got. The slower he does it the longer it takes and the less the maximum strain imposed, and so the best chance of no damages. Don't even think about elastic ropes in this case.

Best use a chain in jobs like this as they drop dead on the ground if anything gives.

is there a "wanted" section on ere i'm after a disco transfer box for me 110

I came across a bloke in a disco stuck in the dunes near me not long ago. He'd phoned the AA and they'd just laughed:D He was just sitting there not knowing what the hell to do. If he'd had half a brain he could have found some wood off the beach and got himself out but alas he had no idea. Yanked him out with me 110 as it was getting dark, he was very, very grateful.

are there any laws relating to inland salvage rights ?

The LandRovers (Salvage Rights and Responsibilities) Regulations, 2007

I think section 1 covers the point well enough.
