Here is something to get your teeth into. About a month ago I noticed that my P38 diesel was not changing gear at the same rev range as it had been and not locking the torque converter up . So spent a few hours looking through Rave and came to the conclusion I needed to get the fault codes read. I now have my very own Hawkeye. Now things should be easy. Plugged it in and found no faults with the gear box and one fault code 136 with the engine this is the 4th injector lift sensor. Anyway I have had the Hawkeye plugged in reading engine live data for a couple of days and found something strange. When the engine is cold it ticks over at about 1000rpm for a few seconds then drops to about 750rpm. Hawkeye reads -39 deg boots temp ( I think this indicated open circuit ) and engine temp of 17deg. Engine temp rises and car drive fine. Now for the interesting bit. At 50mph the torque converter locks up as it should engine temp on dash reads normal, about half way round the gauge. The temp on Hawkeye reads 60deg ish then the gearbox unlocks the torque converter and the Hawkeye shows engine temp to be 20deg. Tick over is now 1000rpm and gear changes are at about 3500rpm. Next set of lights and the tick over is 1200rpm and Hawkeye engine temp is -2deg. Dash gauge is still reading normal so the Hawkeye is reading something else. Question is what is it reading. I have driven the car with the Hawkeye attached and there is a definite connection between the engine temp the Hawkeye is reading and the tick over . It’s as if the engine thinks it’s under load when the Hawkeye engine temp is low. The lower the tem the higher the tick over and gear change revs. The Hawkeye engine temp alters up and down between -2deg and 72deg as you drive and at the higher temps the gear box acts as it should. Any one got ant idea’s.
Many thanks
