heard a buzzing noise this morning when i let the dog out, took me ages to realise what it was, it was coming from the S2 that i haven't driven for weeks. flicking different switches on and off altered the tone, then i pressed the starter button and it stopped. I think the starter is on its last legs , could the frost be shorting something out. last time i tried to start it the connection on rear of starter button thats on the engine side of bulkhead started to smoke.I have disconnected the battery.

I'd be buying a new switch, it's smoking either because starter motor is pulling too much current or you've got a hot spot weld on switch contacts causing it to have high spots on contact plates.

have you measured resistance across switch with batt disconnected?

Electrics aren't my thing so will probably replace switch and get starter motor refurbed, its all going to be stripped and rebuilt later this year. What would make it buzz though its only started doing it today.

buzzing usually comes from a relay coil breaking down, I'm not familiar with the 2a but has it got a contractor/relay in the starter switch?

is it one of these that was burning/buzzing?

also check your terminals are tight on it cause they can arc/burn if loose too

that looks a lot like the bit that was over heating. was too cold to do a lot of looking around this morning, will reconnect battery and do a thorough check when I get a minute.

Had a MK2 cavalier that did this. A few day's later it started on it's own and having been left in first drove it's self until it hit the house. Lucky no one in the way and little damage to the car but it did flatten the waste pipe from the bathroom ha ha.
