Finally ordered myself a voltmeter to try and sort my winch. Nothing still. there is power getting to the remote control socket, checked all my connections and switch on remote, fine, but still no power going to the winch. How do i go about checking the solenoids? any other ideas?

many thanks, ali

ok first when u operate the controls can you hear the solonoids clonking i.e making contact? If so do they work all the time when you push the remote?

If you hear them operating then you know its the solonoid itself is faulty or its the high current side of the things.

If you cannot hear the solonoids operating then its the low current side. Its also worth noting that my winch packed up and needed a clonk or 2 on the main casing to get it to work due to getting dirty or wet contacts .being in need of a service.

Most common mistake is to leave the small black wire off the earth on the bottom of the casing LH side.

You can remove the cover and directly power the solenoids to check them.

There are also 3 heavy duty cables running to the motor. One is a common and the other two are in and out (on Warns they are marked F1 and F2). You can 'short' the common (usually black) to one or other of the 'F' cables and the motor should spin in the direction.

All this is best tried with the cable removed or half spooled out so as not to cause any damage.

Put your location (roughly, like town/area/starship not full address) into your CP then you might get someone offer to pop round and have a look, or you take it to them!

;)

cheers for all your advice guys, im in cheshire if anyone can help me out. In answer to the questions there is no clicking or anything from the solenoids. Have checked all the connections earths etc as i have just replaced the winch bumper, all seem fine. So maybe i should give the clunk and hardwiring a go? Can the armature just stick if it is unused for a while?

I'd pop over but Bedfordshire is a bit of a ways. Seems like you have an open circuit to the handheld remote. No power being supplied to the remote and thus no power being switched to operate the solonoids.

Yeah its not exactly down the road. haha. i have a reading from the socket to which the remote connects of 12.6volts so the remote is getting power, also have tested the remote and that works?? thanks again for the help
