Hi all,

Can anyone help me.

I have a P38 with the orginal Clarion Stereo. My wife took it out the other day and returned it with Mute being displayed on the Stereo and I'm unable to get rid of it, and the Stereo user manual is missing from my handbook.

Also I get a random noise from the stereo it's self, and sounds a little like the tape deck motor running.

Any help would be most gracefully received.

I get the same problem after using the steering wheel controls.

I don't think the handbook tells you how to operate the MUTE function.

I think you need to press a combination buttons on the steering wheel, but I can't for the life of me remeber what they are!

Not much help, but at least you know it's not broken.

HI
when i got mine there was a mobile phone hands free kit mounted on the dash & wired in . I removed this & cut the hands free from its cable. This resulted on the Stereo being on permanent mute ( thinking the mobile was being used)
This was resolved by taking out the radio, & one of the wires says tele mute or similar, this was still wired into the hands free ,kit - so i cut it & taped it up - hey presto no muted stereo!!!

Gently pull the platsic surround off your radio. once off youll se Top left & right are two round ish holes, insert a small allen key or similar in each & getnly pull the stereo out ( the allen keys release the locking bit that holds the stereo in the dash)
look at each wire on the loom from the back of the radio & each should have small writing on it. Find the one that says Tele mute or Mobile mute ( mute the common theme here) if its connected to something try cutting it ( you can always reconnect) if not make sure it is taped up so no connection is being made

Hope this works(it did for me)

The mute problem is caused by worn / dirty switches on the steering wheel giving a bad signal to the radio which it interprets as a mute from a mobile phone. To clear the mute, disconnect the battery 1. loosen battery terminals first 2. switch on ignition for a short while, then turn the ignition off then 3. remove the battery terminals within 17 seconds - this stops the allarm going off .4. leave for at least half an hour for the airbag system to lose any residual charge .5. Remove airbag on steering wheel, 4 x TORX screws accessed from behind the wheel, you will have to juggle the wheel back and forth to get access. The switches are an easy replacement and only cost about £25 for the set - you will need a very small TORX bit to undo the screws holding the switches to the steering wheel. - Job done.........

Thanks for all the advise.

It does appear that my steering controls are dirty, I may also try aerosole switch cleaner before replacing them.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
