Steering wheel adjustment - Broken!!

My steering wheel has just dropped. It will move in and out but not up and down. You can hear the motor turning but nothing happens. You can freely move the steering wheel up an down. I want to see if I can fix this myself as it appears something has moved or something. How do you remove the housing please? Any help appreciated
 
Done it. There is a spindle that has a brass block threaded on it with a lug at each side. The lugs fit between a U-shaped bracket that looks as if its part of the steering column. One if the arms of the offending U bracket had sheared off leaving only half a U if you see what i mean So what I did was take the spindle off and move the block so the lug was resting against the remaining bit of the U bracket. The weight of the steering wheel means it moves down naturally but the bracket now pushes on the lug to lift it. The only downside is now there is excessive play in an upwards movement as there is only one arm of the bracket to prevent play. I am going to try and find a bolt and thread this on to prevent any further play.

I must say I am shocked as to how this piece of metal has snapped clean off!! Anyway I am happy with the fix and has saved me a small fortune I imagine.

As you can see the tilt nut sits in between a horseshoe shaped piece of moulded alloy. The moulded alloy is a single piece which appears to be part of the steering assembly. One half of the horseshoe has snapped cleanly off!! Anyone else experienced this?
 
Tonight I have emailed LR, as there was a recall in Aug 2006 to have the steering column replaced on all L322's. We shall see...
 
would be nice to hear if LR fix it for you.

thats if you haven't already had the recall work done ?

does the recall part fix the problem for good then ?
 
Hummm.. No outstanding recall work found!! I'm gonna fix it myself.. A nut threaded on with a washer will do the trick (until the other side of the horseshoe bracket snaps then I'm chuffed)

I don't know what the part number is, and I don't even know what it looks like, but I have all the parts I need except the bit that connects the flexible shaft to the spindle. If you have that piece spare, PLEASE pm me! :)
 
Ok looks like I have found a replacement steering column for a reasonable price. It hasn't got any motors but the ones on mine are fine. Has anyone on hear changed the steering column? Or anyone know of any guides? Thanks
 
I've had a butchers at rave. It details the part and stuff but its not exactly a step by step guide. I have found one for £120 which is a bargain (2004) but I want to know if this is diyable...
 
I believe it is, but it could take a day if not two to dismantle the dash and etc to get it out and back together again....

You will need to get the Steering Angle Sensor recalibrated (not just reset) using a diagnostic device I believe if your changing that by replacing the Coloumn.
 
Really... Hmmm sounds like a big job and whilst I am fairly good with stuff I don't think I would feel comfortable with messing with something as important as steering. I guess I am looking a few hundred quid in labour for a garage to do it then!! Brill

Others have reported being able to do it in 4-5 hours - just need to take your time!!!
