Freelander 1 Steering makes noises and feels heavy on full lock

Another day, another issue!

The steering gets heavy and makes strange noises (sort of like tyres rubbing) and the odd clonk when turned to full lock.

I've checked the tyres and can't see any rubbing and checked the power steering fluid level. Where should I check next?

Yes, both left and right.

Possibly a slipping drive belt at a guess. They don't last forever even if they look ok. The way to tell is to check the temperature of the pump pulley after a few seconds held on full lock. If the pulley is hot, the belt is likely slipping.
