Technically not a defender question, but it's for my 90, so here is as good as any...

I've got 33/12.5XR15 wheels on my landy, and I want to fit a spare to the back (I've got a nice heavy duty chassis mounted carrier that I need to fit to the back for it).

So, getting a new spare tyre is straight forward - but I also need to get a steel rim to go with it. I'm confused though - for example if I look on paddocks, they have 2: 15x8 or 15x10 - I'm a bit new to all this, and I can't work out what one I would need?

Yeah yours will probably be stamped with something along the lines of 15x7j et25

Once you know what it is, then you can reorder. The number followed by the J is the width of the rim in inches.

As for tyre sizes don't get me started! Only the British could invent a size format that is metric & imperial

Ok, so as they don't make my tyres anymore, I'm not getting the exact ones that are fitted - so is the rim not matched to the tyres? for example, if I got a BFGoodrich AT KO 33/12.5xR15 for the spare, and I got hold of exactly the same size rims used for my current tyre - how can I tell everything is going to match up? Do the tyres not dictate the rim size?

If I was you I would do the following.

Make sure I know what size the current wheels are.

Then contact one of the many suppliers who sell tyres and modular steel wheels and ask then if that size would match the new tyre you require , then buy the tyre and steel wheel as a package from them.

Job done.

Cheers

Sort of the other way around. More the rim size dictate what size tyres can be fitted.

Tyre make doesn't matter though outer diameter may vary slightly.

Tyres and wheels are a weird subject. But a wheel is generally matched to a tyre, however there will be multiple size tyres you can run on the rim.

I have 18" wheels and currently run a 255/55/18
I could also run a 245/55/18 which would be slightly skinnier and also smaller outer DIA. Or I could run a 245/70/18 which would be slightly taller.

The first number is its width, the second is its height% in relation to its width (confusing as ****) and the last is the wheel dia it fits.

Each axle has to run the same size tyre, however front and rear axles can run different size tyres legally.

I expect you have 10J rims given the width of 33

Ok yeah, so I get that bit about the tyre sizes and what the numbers mean, and that I need 15" rims - but nothing anywhere seems to say, "ok, if you're buying the BFGoodrich AT KO 33/12.5xR15 tyre, then you need to have a 15x10 rim and not the 15x8"

That width tyre should run on either a 8J or 10J, however on one the tyre will bulge out from the rim and the other won't as much, so you can't always grab too much info from the tyre size in reference to the rim, apart from its diameter.

Each tyre size will have a preferred width rim it fits, however they can run rims either side of the preference, like when people have wide wheels with smaller tyres, they get tyre stretch (massive in the dun scene and drift scene)

But to find out the rim size it will be a case of finding the stamp, or measuring it with a tape measure
