Hi, this is my first post as I am just about to buy a 2001 Td4 3 door Freelander. Went to view at garage today and looks good, but on startup it did put out a bit of diesel smoke is this normal? I should add that the dealer (not LR) said later in conversation that while I could take on a test drive it was low on power low down, due to MAF sensor fault. The new MAF is arriving tomorrow so I am going back to have a proper test drive. I did take a 2003 td4 out and that wasnt bad at all. Better than I was expecting, I currently have a Volvo 850 estate with the T5 (240bhp) engine. I have had diesels (escort 60bhp!! and verctra 80bhp) so I wasnt expecting the TD4 to be very quick, it was quicker that I expected.

Anyway I have read this forum and going to check electrics, any oil leaks from diff, IRD, and Viscous coupling etc. Anything else I should check?

Thanks

yup. . . .the smoke on start up ,could be one glow plug u/s or split turbo hoses, this would also give lack er power ,dunt buy it less they fix these ere fings. . . .oh un welcome earthling. . . . . . . . . .:)

It has done 93K miles, I dont thing the fault MAF would give smoke on startup. It isnt cheap cheap, its about what I would have expected. £5300 for a 2001, 3 door, td4, S model, the interior and exterior are in good condition, and it has a full service history. It will be supplied with a 12 month MoT and 3 month guarantee. I would have liked lower milage and air con but there are non anywhere me for sort of 5K.

So I guess the test drive should be interesting.

Thanks

Sounds a bit expensive for that year & mileage. A 2001(51) reg books at about £4500 retail (£3400 trade) in this month's Glass's Guide so there's quite a markup in there. Plenty of room for negotiation I would think...

Alternatively, are you really that desparate for a car at the moment? If you can hang on I'm sure that you could turn up a better spec lower mileage car near you. Better than buying a car now that you won't be happy with in the long run...

Cheers

That's probably why he offered me £1000 for my 1995 Volvo 850 T5 estate with 152,000 on the clock. I probably would only get £500 if that for the Volvo.
Not really desperate but will have to tax Volvo at end of month. I must admit that the body work and interior doesnt seem to have a mark on it.

I think it may be one of those things I have to think hard about and maybe wait a little longer as you said. But it would be an easy swop, garage only 10 miles away etc........ Decisions decisions!!!!! I will have to be strong and objective with the test drive.
Thanks

Forgot to say it was on forecourt at £5950 not that that changes book price. ;-) I must admit that minimum price on ebay Classified is £6200+ and min on Auto Trader is £3975 but thats over 200 miles away. There are 8 in the whole UK below £5K on Auto trader, I know thats not what you would pay but its the starting point and the closest one is 80 miles away.

I will try and inspect it very closely, thanks for all the tips.

Cheers, it was only a puff of smoke on startup. But I am just about to go to the garage and test drive it so I will see what it is like for smoke and power. I will test the other things that have been pointed out.

Thanks.

Just back from test drive. Cold engine and no smoke on startup! Good drive, no knocking noises even on full lock in circles round a tarmac car park. I wonder what the locals thought of me driving round and round in circles? It did pull a little to the right, but dealer sorting that.
So deal done, I can collect it on Monday, bit of a wait but we haven't time to collect over weekend.
So fingers crossed all will be well.
