Bought a series 3 a few months ago starting it is a bit wierd. On all modern cars you turn the key all the way round, which engages the starter and the engine starts. On my landy you turn the key all the way round and the starter turns over the engine but it will not start until you let the key go and it turns back a quarter turn. Is this normal or is the ignition switch wired up wrong. I have the correct series 3 switch by the steering column. Thanks for your help.

presumably yours is petrol but may have diesel ignition switch or have been wired incorrectly ,coil live needs to be while cranking,check which terminals are live while cranking on switch if none another switch needed
Sounds like there's a wiring error somewhere 'cos that's not how mine works. Wiring diagrams, colour codes and more here:-

If it ain't broke don't fix it 
I'd say leave it alone if it starts easily when you do that, someone may have wired it up badly but if it's not bothering you and you cant be arsed faffing about with wires leave it be for the time being

My series switch when cranking the engine over would cut power to the other bts including the stop solenoid, thus it wouldn't start at all. Cure was to fit another switch to turn on power to the fuel alone. (it's a 2.5na diesel) Not sure if this helps you petrol heads.

Mine does that if the battery is flat. While cranking there isn't enough poke left in the battery to make sparks.
Measure your terminal voltage at the battery with engine stoped if it is less than 12.5V check battery. With engine running at a fast idel if it is less than 13.5V check alternator.
