1). Please go to the Introduction section and do the thing.

2). Please give information as to the age and type of Freelie you have.

3). Have you had the codes read ? or checked any relays or fuses that may be hiding within the nethers of your vehicle ?

So it's not cranking at all when you first try to start it, no clicking noise no flashing lights etc, if so it sounds like the starter motor, the contacts and plunger may need replacing, what year FL2 is it Auto or manual? have you checked the fuses, if it's the starter it will be one of the below kit

If I disconnect a battery terminal it starts and runs really well and I can stop it and restart it all day provided I leave the key in it's slot, if I remove the key, and then re insert it, the dash lights up, but they go out again and there is a click from the passenger footwell, the engine does not crank, but does once I have disconnected and reconnected the battery again.
Freelander 2. 07 2.2td

Hi, it's a freelander2 07. 2.2td. I've checked removed every fuse on it, there are 2 codes permanent oil temp, air intake temp, new sensors are on order, when I reconnect the battery other codes come up 1 relates to the BCM

While checking 'every fuse on it', did you note if the fuse receptors were free from corrosion ?

Did you check the relays ?

Did you look to find out what the 'noise down in the passenger footwell' was ?

I did, I pulled out, cleaned and replaced them all in all 3 boxes, only visual checks on the relays..for what that's worth, but cleaned the contacts, the noise in the footwell sounds like a low buzz, lasts just for a second or two, when under the bonnet taking off and on a terminal there is again a louder buzz noise that seems to come from behind the engine between it and the bulkhead and another buzz like noise from the center front area where the egr is, after the 2 second buzz there is a whinning noise from around the egr, the engine will now start first time, all day long...until you remove the key, you put the key in press the ignition once for the dash lights and then to start up, this is when you get the click/ buzz noises in the footwell, so then your back to the battery terminal ...and so on, someone has suggested that the immobiliser is not allowing it to start...but I've no idea about where to start with that one
