Help ....

My 1998 2.0ltr Diesel Freelander is not very well ...

Starting from cold is troublesome ... engine cranks for anything upto 15 seconds before firing ... yet when hot no problem at all. Engine cranks well, and attempts to fire but soemthing is holding it back almost ...

Personally I suspect Fuel Filter .... and not the glo-plugs .... what do you guys think ?

My suspicion is based on Landrovers own Technical Bulletin (number 0016 dated 13/03/99) which states that poor performance / starting issues are usally linked to diesel fuel filter.

Anybody else suffer from this ?

Yep - have tried giving the glo-plugs a couple of turns - but seems to make little or no (noticeable) difference.

I've read stories about low fuel pump pressure, fuel pump problems etc but I haven't got any of the other symptoms.

Oh yeah - in the summer months everything is fine ... no starting problems at all. Is there some kind of temperature sensor that affects / controls starting perhaps ?

DOn't overlook the glow plug relay. This can suffer from burnt out contacts and corroded connections. Its worth replcing for the low cost involved.

I sympathise mate, I've got exactly the same problem.Loads of white smoke when she finally fires up?....I've so far changed the fuel filter, fuel pump( replaced wiv one out a rover 420d-exactly the same, 1/3rd the price..), all glow plugs and the relay as listed by RoverRon. My current thought is an air bleed into the fuel lines, if it ain't that I fink me compression's up the swanny, and not sure how I'll deal with that.:confused:


A gallon of 4 star and a box of matches probably....:p

Try swapping the starter and adjacent relays over, they’re both the same rating. Should identify if the relay was faulty. They live just behind the battery.
If it helps, renew the starter relay with an up rated 70amp version, cheapest I could find was £6, from 12 Volt Relay - heavy duty make and break
If not, check the earth strap from engine to body. Take it off, clean it and the securing bolts or nuts up and re-fit. I had a problem on an old motorbike because the earth strap securing bolt had been fixed with a threadlocking compound that also partially insulated the strap. If you have a spare bit of strapping, might be worth having two installed?

Someone on this forum also mentioned a gauze filter on the lift pump that may require cleaning, but the relay and earth strap fix sorted mine out before I had to go looking for it.

I read somewhere that its the pump timing can be out due to it being set with slack on the lower belt run. Mine is a pig when cold. It has all of the symptoms you have talked about. I will get round to setting the timing. but once it starts, you forget. I'm now used to giving it a squirt of easy start every morning.
 
Well - just an update :)

My Freelander went in for an service & MOT. Anyway - she passed the MOT fine - no problems at all.

I mentioned the starting problem, and all the usual checks were carried out (Glo plugs etc) - all were fine. Then the mechanic (not a Land Rover one I hasten to add) noticed that the 4 pipes leading off from the fuel pump were quite badly corroded -- so he replaced them all (just over £5 each - quite reasonable I thought) and since then (admittedly only 2 cold morning starts) have all been fine - starting almost instantly / within a couple of seconds ... much more like a diesel should ...

I'm hoping that's cured it ... but so far so good !

Latest update campers!

Me rad blew last week...those nice chappies at Nene Overland managed to replace it in 48hrs for £270 fitted. They also foc looked at the fuel pipes from the rear pump and found no corrosion. Ah well, one less area to check..they also cleaned the egf/maf, not sure which, couldn't speak to the mech who actually did it, but it made a, say 10% improvement in the start, still ****e but....

I'm now left wiv checking the pipes leading to the injectors I reckon, unless anyones got other suggestions.....:eek:
