Hi all,

Since my HP fuel pump was changed, I have had an issue with the starter not always engaging. Just recently the issue is getting worse, with most of the time the motor does not engage.

Turning the key result in just a noise.

not sure if the issue is worse due to the weather hot or just wear, but it becoming really annoying.

After it fails, leaving it a few minutes usually gets it to work.

Does this require the motor to be changed, or is there a simpler and cheaper solution?

Thanks

Is it just a clunk that you are getting?

If so its the solenoid contacts and you can buy a starter solenoid repair kit from eBay for around a tenner.

I heard the motor scream, but it's not driving the engine round. Wait a little while an the next time it works fine. :(

Will look for the repair kit.

exactly. the motor spins (and makes a screaming noise) like there is no load on it. it does not turn the engine.

Some times its fine and goes first time, other times it take a few tries and nothing but motor noise. wait a lil bit and it'll go.

it would not start once on a while, now its more likely to not start.

Do as the MHM suggested and lubricate the drive gear. This fault is common on the M47 powered Rover 75.

In modern pre-engaged starters, the solenoid forces the driven gear into position (to engage the flywheel) before it starts to rotate.

Think a refurb unit is in order.

I did NOT say lubricate the drive gear.
What I DID say was wash all the crud off with petrol. Oil will collect all that crud, so if you want to lubricate the spindle or gear, use a dry silicone lubricant or oil VERY SPARINGLY.

More likely tho, it will need a refurb ( about £45).

I never said you did hence the word AND! But if you clean the spindle and gear with a solvent it will need lubricant.

I haven't checked anything as yet. But the issue did start after the HP pump was changed, so I assume that the starter was removed and not refitted properly.

I just wanted to get everyones opinion before I start tampering with it. Might try an ebay refurb kit, as it does not look to difficult to do. Will look at crud while it is off.
