My starter motor continues to turn even after the engine has turned over. i don't think it's causing any damage to the flywheel but the noise is just really irritating! any ideas why this is happening, wired up incorrectly maybe? help would be appreciated as i can't hear myself think over the noise !

petrol or diesel ,probably needs removing and bendix cleaning

Petrol, i have already had it out a few times to clean and grease the bendix. it hasn't seemed to make any difference unfortunately.

Are you sure its the starter? I thought I had the same problem 2 weeks ago, a loud high pitch shrill especially on revving. Turns out a washer from a bracket was rubbing on the alternator impeller fan. Just a thought.

Gears are a bit clunky but feels normal, i will also check for some more simple resolutions but i have definitively traced the noise to the starter/flywheel housing.
