So the next problem (in a long line of problems) is the car is having trouble starting. Just clicks then nothing. Goes after about 15-20 tries so thinking it's the solenoid.

Without booting up rave where is the starter motor/solenoid? Hoping the contacts just need cleaned!
 
Its presumably around the bell housing as they drive the flywheel.

All the talk of replacing the HP pump solendoid seals is that you have to remove the starter to get the solenoid out - so look behind the HP pump!
 
Td4 starter is at front of engine. Couple.of bolts and one has a nut on from memory.

Starter out and solenoid is on the end. You can clean contacts but they burn. Better to replace with a repair kit. Only about £20.

If it’s F1 TD4, it’s at the front, slightly to the right of center as you look in the engine bay.
Remove the battery tray first.
2 bolts IIRC - 1 is ‘hidden’
1 bolt holding the main wire on

You can buy replacement contact kits and plunger on the bay for pennies.

Engine won't turn over (intermittent)

1999 2.0 Diesel Freelander 1, engine won't crank or turn over when I turn the key. Normal lights on dash. I don't think it's the battery or alternator. The only audible noise is the usual electrical buzz that always comes from the engine when the key is in (side question: where does hum that...

First clean the spade end to see if it's got any corrosion, se if the car starts, if not then remove the starter motor, change out the contacts and plunger.

Rover 75 link but the FL1 TD4 is the same.
