Hi. Just been checking threads to find out how to remove an L series starter motor from a Freelander 1 diesel. Nothing! They are all about the TD4!
Does anyone have a link to a video tutorial? YouTube is the same!

You don't really need a video - it really easy at at the top of the engine bay - take the acoustic cover off and its nice and easy to get to.

Just unbolt it.

From memory, 1 wire is push on, the other screwed on. Then its just the 2 bolts holing it to the engine/bell housing.

Full info (what I used) is in the LR Rave Freelander workshop manual...

You need a Windows PC to run that on.

The only complication is that you can't see the bottom bolt for the starter as its underneath it.

But its the same as the 1 on the top that you can see and it is easy access - just feel the socket onto it.

Undo the bolts and pull it out.

Examine the old and new one when its out to make sure its identical. There are some (for different engines) with subtle differences. The solenoid on the side of the starter may look a bit different - but make sure the surface mating to the engine is identical and bolt holes.

The acoustic cover is off and air intake assembly as well. There is one bolt which is also holding a tie rod. The other seems to be in the bowels of the engine with very little access. The car is LHD. Does this make a difference? The other problem is a big rubber pipe which goes over the starter motor.

Woops - forgot about the tie rod. That is secured by the top bolt for the starter.

I think the first thing I did was remove it. However, you've got me thinking on whether I needed to put a jack under the engine to support it. I'm pretty sure I didn't, that's not the mount, that is on the gearbox.

There are no 'others' in the bowls of the engine. There is 1 bolt at the bottom of the starter. It is easily accessible with a socket & ratchet with an extension bar. You can feel for it to put the socket on it.

Both bolts came out easily. Putting them back, the bottom bolt was easier than the top as the top one has that tie rod and keeps wanting to skew the bolt off going in straight - but still wasn't difficult.

I don't remember if mine had that 'big rubber pipe'. If you are talking the one on the left, then yes it would have had it as that looks like a coolant or induction pipe. If you are talking the one on the right, that that looks like an insulated AC pipe and its possible/likely the AC is installed differently on LHD.
