Today for the 4th time in 2 weeks I've turned the key to hear clicking noises then on about 5th/6th attempt she's fired up...but, she only does this on the first turnover in the morning, the rest of the day she's fine... I'm presuming its starter motor??

If so, any ideas how much I'll be looking at to get her fixed?!

Thanks in advance!

What engine is it?

Sounds like either starter motor solenoid contacts or a bad/corroded connector.

If its a td5 it's most likely the solenoid contacts and can be bought off eBay for around £10-£15.

Sorry I can't give you a link but I'm on my phone and I'm too much of a retard to add links with it.

Odds on its the solenoid contacts. You can sometimes get away with cleaning and filing them up but its just delaying the inevitable. Get the repair kit as its not an expensive fix and only takes half an hour if you stop for a brew halfway through. Hardest part is getting the starter bolts out and then back in again.

As there's no one mechanically minded in the house I went to the local garage today... They advised me to get the whole Starter Motor done... total cost for part and labour £279... am I being ripped off?!!

Take starter out, fit new OEM one from Island 4x4 at £160 + VAT
So their labout charge must be about £85

Take starter out, repair using £10 kit, re-fit same starter.
So that bill should be about £95.

Thanks guys.. have ordered the solenoid kit from ebay on your recommendation! If it all goes eventually then its only an extra £13 so no hardship there, will phone around a couple of other garages to price up labour. Thanks!

The actual starter motor is virtually bomb proof and very rarely goes wrong.
Its the contacts that cause the problem as they burn away over time.
Any back street mechanic could do the job. You dont even need any special tools.
Just a metric socket set and a few spanners.
