Starter motor issues

Went to start landrover tonight, tried it a couple of times and by the third go wouldn't even turnover. nothing, zip, nada.

only normally start it up about once a month as I'm working on it at the moment, so had jump leads connected as well.

Thinking it will be the starter motor, but is there any other possibility before I go and buy a new starter motor?
 
so was it turning over and not firing?

check all your leads. engine earth strap, batt pos and earth. make sure all contact points are clean. clean the contact points on your starter solonoid. which style starter do you have, is the solonoid ontop of the motor? ive just stripped mine and it was an absolute mess. needed a real good clean. i suggest you work on your leads 1st before thinking of buying a new motor and id deff suggest cleaning yours up 1st. a new one will set you back £80-100 at best. recon units ive seen in this price range too! and they want yours back!

No wasn't even turning over, charge light and all electrics working fine but nothing. must admit something was making a noise from under the bonnet on the first two goes that didn't sound healthy. Not engine though.

Anyway took the plunge today and bought brand new starter motor from paddocks, took the old one off and looked in the box to find that it looks nothing like the old one. No coil pack on top like the old one and the shaft wasn't housed like the old one and seemed longer.

Have I got the right one? the part code matches ok on the box. But just seems totally different to whats come off!!.
 
ERR 5009? what exactly did you order and what engine do you have? diesel starter motor for 2.5 n/a, 2.5TD, 200tdi is ERR 5009... i think. thats what i have. if yours had the starter solonoid on top and is an old series, i think this is the one you need. if this is what came out, you need to put the same back in.

Thanks for pointers, have taken the plunge and bought new starter motor. It's turning into a bit of a battle trying to fit it though. have a 1980 5 bearing 2.25 engine and can't locate where the crank handle engages the engine goes so i can turn the flywheel over so the teeth will line up.

currently taking some deep breaths and will crack on with it later. So this is what owning a land rover is all about !! :eek:
