Hi guys

I don’t know if you can help me. I have a problem with my 90 starter motor engine 19j 2.5td. Let’s start from the beginning I bought my landy about 2 summers ago. At first I had no problems with the starter motor, then a couple of months later problem started with the winter cold (like a cold lol) what was happening was that some times when I am about to started the engine the starter motor makes a loud noise slipping the gear teeth and failing to start the engine. At the beginning it was happening rarely so I didn’t bother (like once a week or less) but up to about 2 months later it was happening almost once every 2 days. It was too much so I decided to check it out. I found out that it was quite dirty so I assumed that the gear shaft was not moving out forward as it should be so I just opened it and cleaned it up (BTW I found that the teeth of the starter motor where a bit damaged but not that bad) I mounted it. A week or 2 late it started again. This time I said it is not for me so I took it to a mechanic which he took the starter motor to an electrician. It worked for a bit, 6 month later the sounds came back. But this time it was happening rarely so I didn’t bother. Now winter is approaching and it got worse than ever now this past week the noise is happening every time I try to start the engine.
I was thinking of just changing the starter motor but I am worried that the teeth of the fly way might got damaged too and the problem will remain there.
Did any one of you ever have a problem like this before?
Any suggestion?

The gear teeth on the starter flywheel are a lot harder than the teeth on the starter motor.
If the teeth on the starter are worn then replace it. It will only get worse.
