squeeling brakes

Hi all,
My brakes on 2000 dhse are squeeling and getting progressively worse, also brake pedal seems to travel on first press, if pressed second time it is firmer. Can anyone tell me procedure for brake repair/inspection, if I need any special tools and basically do's & dont's. Cheers.
 
Hi there.
If the pads don't have angles on the edges they tend to squeal, and also if they're wearing down or overly dusty. It sounds like they are wearing out but just pop the wheel off and see what thickness is left on the pads (measure with a tape measure) and check thickness of disc's and also check for sign's of brake fluid leaks around calipers. If the pads are thin and the disks are too it will give extra pedal travel. If you can take a good picture with your phone and post it or post how much brake pad is left and disk thickness.

Sorry to jump on your thread Marky.
My pads were screaming like hell,One raining morning i took the pads out,Copper Slipped the backs and rougthened up the pad...Lasted a day! Ive just gone to put some new pads in(sunny day so im not rushing!) and the N/S/F sliding caliper is siezed solid and rusted to excess on 1 pin/shaft...
Silly question,but what is the sliding "bracket bit" called? The part bolted onto the hub,with the 2 Stainless/Chromed pins in,that the caliper slides on?
Dont wanna bang it about too much as reckon it will snap the rusty pin...

BUT IT'S BETTER TO CHANGE THEM BECAUSE THEY AFFECT THE DISCS
WHEN YOU BUY NEW PADS BE CAREFUL THAT THEY'RE PREMIUM QUALITY TO AVOID HEARING ANY SQUEELING ...
NOTE : ONCE , I HEARD MY NEIGHBOUR WHO HAS 5 P38s THAT ALL HIS P38 CAUSE SQUEELING CAUSE OF THEIR HARD WEIGHT .. I DON'T KNOW IF HE HAS RIGHT ...

My cd doesnt suggest a seperate name for the part your describing, but don't you get the replacment pins in with the brake pads or am i thinking of the wrong part?

Sorry mate,i think its my description...
Its the actual cast "caliper holding bracket"
Its either part of the hub or bolted to the hub,and the caliper bolts onto it with 2 bolts..
The Pins are what the whole sliding caliper slides on..Not Pad holding pins..
The two pins (1xtop and 1x bottom) are about 3" long and as thick as your little finger...and have a square flat washer on the inside...Im sure they are either pressed into the bracket or welded..
Not very good at describing,,so will take a pic tommorow..

Yeah,,Sure thats the ones..Well i did dig a rubber cover off to see the rust!!..Have just put new pads in,,Not original LR ones but a good make i.e Ferrodo or something (Well £30 worth) and never got no pins....
Hmmm,,wonder if LR sell them seperate or even if i have to buy new pads could be worth it!
Looks like you could get a 17 mm spanner on the square washer end and possibly unscrew them,,But mine is so badly rusted away im sure its gonna shear off....
Will give it a good soak in WD40 tommorow and a gentle tap about see if im brave enougth!!!

Mine were Ferrodo. I took mine out and cleaned and lightly greased them. Did they come with the angled edges to stop the squealing? I Bought mine from local car parts man who informed me that they were Peugot pads, and it cost me £18 for the four and they came with the sliders, unfortunatly he's closed down now for a new bypass.

Yeah they are tapered edge,,Sure they were Ferrodo..(Or the Yellow box with Black stripe? Hmmm Cant be that,,sure thats Lucas)
No pins with mine...Will ring LR tommorow see if they sell them seperate...The pads i took out had loadsa meat on them..Noise is only from this 1 side so im guessing its where the calipers not "adjusting" as it cant slide..Thus pushing the pad onto the disc crooked..
