Got a bit of a strange noise which I can't really identify whilst driving. It sounds like a chipring just beyond the dashboard in front of me, and only seems to happen under acceleration, or at constant speed with the accelerator down. It happens in all gears, and at all speeds, but only when in gear and at speed.

Because it will only happen under acceleration, I haven't been able to identify it by just sticking my head under the bonnet.. I'm going to get my overalls on tomorrow and have a good check around, but if anyone has any ideas on what I should look at, it'd be appreciated!

does it do it when stationary and you rev engine or only when moving. if its only when moving could be your prop ujs . had this on mine a couple of weeks ago replaced 3 of the 4 now all lovely and quiet , well not quiet but better

it's definitely just when moving. before I take the dash apart, I might just take the floor panel out and see if it sounds like the prop when i drive it.

it's just bloody started raining again though, typical :(

Cheers for the tips :)

mine done this about 5 months bk.
kept looking and wondering wot the hell it could be,
and then on a day out wiv the mrs and kids i was driving along and then suddenly a whacking big bang followed by a banging on the drivers footwell.

prop had sheared of at the uj.
replaced all the ujs and no more chirps

went down to a farm to use the barn earlier, and thought I'd found the problem. The middle exhaust mount had snapped, and if you moved the exhaust up and down you could hear a similar sounding squeak. In lieu of a new mount, I turned the snapped bit around to stop it making contact, and went for a test drive, which seem to show that the problem was totally fixed! Went out in it again later, and the noise is back with a vengeance, and the exhaust mount hasn't moved back.

Did a couple of other jobs like change my gearbox oil and fix my hand brake whilst I was there although my gearbox still clunks like a bastard :(

My prop UJs seem really solid to be honest, I'm not really sure how to check that there's a problem if there's no play in them.

I do have two grease guns (which I can't find at the moment), but I don't actually know how to use them with the bleed nipples on my props, nor what type of grease to use. I think I'll look in to doing that before I go any further with anything else!

Thanks again.

Steve, nice one, thanks for the offer. I've still got yer phone number somewhere, and it's about time we met, so I'll give you a bell tomorrow if that's alright! :)

lol yeah Its been months and we live less than 10 mins drive from each other lol .

Ill PM you with it again anyway , but im free tomoz ( well got to put the hoover around so the wife jst said LOL ) .

Well, I'm posting this for everyone elses benefit, but I have to say that you're a gent Sypher!

We identified the problem, and got rid of the squeaking, and it could have been any one of these things:

- Completely knackered front prop UJ (transfer end)
- Exhaust mounts all falling to pieces around mid-box
- Clamp missing from downpipe

Not content with fixing my chirping and dangerous prop, I now:

- Know how to adjust tappets
- Have a throttle that actually fully engages
- have an exhaust that isn't blowing (as much)
- Have a few less diesel and oil leaks

All in all, my landy is now quieter, more powerful, and less annoying, so thanks again, and next time I see you, it'll be with many beers (or energy drinks if you prefer cause you must've gone through about 10 of 'em today ;) )!

:D no probs there Tom :) glad the old girl runs a lot better now and you where lucky with that prop UJ :eek: , it was only 3 drinks lol you just kept seeing the same one left in a differnt place LOL , but beers if I dont have to drive anywhere or Monster ( green one ) If I do D lol .

BTW
that plate that leaks oil above the oil filter is an O ring not gasket ( PT number - ERC5913 ) or take off the plate and see if you got an O ring that fits ? ( as its an O ring and not a gasket I might have one ) .

The exhaust bracket on the down pipe is Pt number NTC4580 and the clamp is PtNo NTC4586 and the bolts are just M8'sx 65 mm ( for the clamp ) .

ps
Has the GF driven it yet ??

And dont forget to grab us a UJ :) as that was my only spare :p

Cheers man. I'll order two of those UJ's today, as I'll need to keep one in stock in future too ;)

I'll try and whip off my dodgy injector and sort my alternator tensioner as my next jobs, and then I'll sort the exhaust brackets, fill the holes in my exhaust with weld metal, get my shot blaster, clean and paint the chassis, recondition the transfer box in my shed, put a 200tdi in (just kidding ;) ), and the list goes on lol

Thanks again!
