How the buggery do you get them out when they're rusted in! The ones through the spring to the hanger I can saw out and sort out with the spring off but the ones through the chassis and shackles need to come out so I can press the bush out.

do I just buy a bigger hammer - the front ones are a pig to get to as they are behind a sump protector that is held on by the bolts so I can't get a good swing at em!

Any tricks of the trade I should bear in mind!?! This is doing my head in!

i burn them out ,but theres no easy answer without a gas axe ,chassis isnt that strong to hit against and rubber absorbs shock
 
air chisel with a 10mm drift in the end usualy persuades them with a bit of wd40 if you aint got an air chisel the next best thing is an SDS drill with a 10mm masonry bit in neutral
 
Mmm, Griding off leaves me with a bush, with a bolt still stuck in it so my bush popper outer tool cannot be used to remove the bush. On shackle end I can grind ends off but that still leaves me with the threaded shackle to remove and the same problems all over again...

I was hoping to avoid having to make a stink as it is inside and other people are working there...also how to get burn the rubber out when you can't get to it for the shackles that are still stuck on!

Gah! Wish I'd never started this and taken it to the garage!

big breaker bar on the bolt end and use a lot of force with a good **** with a big hammer now and then while holding torque on the bolt it will either come unsiezed or rip fook out of the rubber in the bush one or the other will give

once youve got play on both undoo them both simultaneously 5 turns at a time the threaded shackle side will come off

once this is off use the bar to hold torque on the bolt if still stuck and **** that back through the bush

this will knacker the bush good n proppa but will get the bugger out :D:D

just a case of brute force and ignorance

Will give that a go. I managed to get the front spring to chassis bush to let go by putting a good heavy spanner on and using a jack to turn it a 1/12th of a turn a go...took about an hour. I can now turn it by hand but can't get a hammer swing at it so cutting it off with a hacksaw....knackering! Looks like that will be what I'll be doing for the next few hours!

The first back one I did all came apart a piece o ****!

i bet its the drivers side one thats a twot to get off innit as i had the same issue but i was on axle stands :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
You can drill the rubber out - less smelly than a blowtorch - go round the bush , then knock out the middle. You can drill one hole and work your way round with a small hacksaw blade.

Yes Johnny, its the driver's side front. I hope the others aren't all such a bunch of bastards!

Well I managed to get the front bolt off by sawing through it and have got the shackle to spring bolt turning slowly by alternately jacking up a spanner on the bolt then push the spring down. The bush is turning in the spring but slow going...When I get time I'm going to go up on Friday and just grind the shackles off, chew/burn/drill out the rubber and saw, bash or otherwise get the sodding bush out!

Anyway I've spotted some more worrying problems the chassis has has a lot of patching at the front and whoever did the welding is worse than me. There's a quarter inch gap in a crap weld next to the bump stop and another crack forward of the cross-member that will need fixing, so wings, radiators and all the rest of the sodding front will have to come off...that's my Easter sorted! How the feck it has held up at all is a mystery!

I feel your pain Dom! I haven't done the front springs yet but for the rear I managed to get good leverage on them. Get a piece of scaffold tube over your spanner if possible.

sounds like youve got exactly the same **** as i have with your front end chassis rails .....:D:D:D fun int it :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
 
Well after a whole weekend of thumping at it I managed to get the bush out (well I did do other things too) but I'm a bit concerned. The new one from Craddocks went in very easily. It slid about 3/4 of the way in by hand and took only gentle persuasion with a tappin stick to go the rest of the way. I thought that they were supposed to be a tight fit...the old one certainly was!
 
The bush through the chassis is usually very tight to press in. the ones in the springs are easy I knock a thin bolster down the eye of the spring to open it up and then you can tap the new bush in or the old one out.

normally the ones through the chassis rails are gits and tight due to corrosion but ive learned it really helps to wrap some 60 grit sandpaper round a suitable size shaft then useing this contraption in a drill hone the cylinder through the chassis rail just enough to clean it out

backyard engineering and 5 minutes frigging about like this saves hours of struggling later on :D:D:D

I did something like that as I'd made a right mess of the eye ****ting the old bush out. I also managed to badly score the eye on one side trying to break through the old bush with a hacksaw. I only lightly sanded the burrs off though.

Thing is, should they be tight, these are just sitting there, hardly an interference fit....I'd started cutting up the scissor jack from my other car to use as a press to pull it in, so that's another thing wasted! I'd imagine this is just going to spin in the chassis and make a mess of the chassis eyes.

Do you think I've over-enlarged the eye or is it just the Britpart bushes I've got that don't actually fit!?!

This is the ****tiest job I've ever had to do on a motor...

Hopefully it is a undersized bush. they do need to be reasonably tight or it may slide out and the shackle will rub on the chassis. If the bush is the right size perhaps loctite or a tack of weld will be called for or if you really want to go to town a new tube welded in.
 
That's what I was thinking, though just been looking at polybushes and they look to just be two plastic inserts and a metal tube that all looks like it might slide out too.

Guess I'll just have to put the spring on and see what happens. If it rattles/slides/falls off I think I might throw in the towel and take it to the garage...though I really don't like to give in!
