Spring noise when turning o/s/f freelander 2

Hi guys ive a Freelander 2 as a daily driver and ive just bought it to be fair, And since ive got it one side of the front suspension is making a bonging noise when station or parking and turning the steering, So i had a look while someone turned the steering to find the spring itself is actually spinning on the shocker spring seat its sort of tensioning up as you turn then jumps round on the spring seat making the noise..

I was convinced this was the common top mount problem most cars suffer from so i ordered the genuine parts from land rover top mount plate and rubber to find when i stripped it down it already had a very recent one fitted but decided to fit the new parts anyway as i had them i reassembled the strut exactly the same way it came apart and it has made difference at all..

Its from the drivers side only passenger is ok, Its also got a new spring on the same side so i did order another spring thinking it might be the wrong spring but it was identical to the one fitted in everyway.

Does anyone have any idea for pointers on this for me its 100% the spring moving on the shockers spring mounting plate as you turn you and see it as it does it turn the steering no noise then as the noise happens the bottom of the spring jumps round the shocker itself..

The only thing i can think of is there something missing out of the whole assembly that's be missed off when the original strut top was fitted and spring, and with me taking it apart after this wouldn't know any ideas guys please..

Mine has an occasional bong noise when reversing if I apply lock at the same time. I've not looked at mine, as it's only an occasional thing.

Yours must be the top mounting sticking, as that's the only part where the rotation of the spring meets the stationery body.

Hi John.
Funny enough i have the same problem, on occasions when reversing off the drive, and then turning it back to get to drive off it makes this boing noise, it has done this after about a month rom purchase 2017-23 looked loads of time never been able to find where and why, does it more so in hot weather and really cold weather, mild temperatures it's fine.

Sounds identical to mine. I only ever hear mine when I'm reversing out of a particular parking space at work, and extremely rarely elsewhere, but I did do it when maneuvering in a car park at a Premier Inn in Wembley on Thursday.

Hi John.
It happened again today when the the car was being tested for it's MOT i half expected the MOT man to say something but no nowt, i am wondering if it's the anti roll bar? but i intend to try and fine out now the car has once again passed it's MOT with no advisories

I also have a suspicion it's the ARB, as it only seems to do it when the wheel are at slightly different heights in the arches.

Mine is easy to source the noise from its the spring spinning on the shocker seat..

What happening is if someone sits in the car and turns the steering the spring itself must sort of wind up and say after 30deg of turning the spring itself jumps on bottom spring seat that's welded to the actual shocker..

You can actually see it happen and can put your hand on the spring as it tensions up then shifts as the spring tension over comes the grip on the bottom seat of the shock..

It cant be the top mount as i replaced the top mount with a motor factors one, as it had recently had a spring fitted by the previous owner, But it made no difference so i then got to thinking its because its a cheaper mounting, So i ordered a genuine land rover top mount plate and rubber and fitted those and its still the same...

So to clarify what's happening is the spring seems to be moving with the top mount as you turn and at a certain point the bottom of the spring jumps to catch up with the top of springs turn rate causing the spring to make rotational move making the noise. Its 100% that making the noise as you can watch it happen..

just cant understand why its doing that any ideas..

The spring at the top should be free to rotate with lower half of the stock. This is part of the MOT check, as a spring jumping can prevent the steering from centering, which is dangerous.
Are you 100% sure that all parts of the bearing assembly are there, and all fitted in the correct places?
I'd be checking against the manual as a reference.
My springs definitely rotate freely with the shock.

Nodge i will have to try and find an exploded diagram on the free lander two front assembly as you could be right something might of been left out to me purchasing the car and its just been reassembled the way it came apart when done the second time..
