Split tyres

Hi all

Would tyres that have splits in the tread be a mot fail ?
The steel wheels I have have loads of tread on them, but are cracked /split

so do I bite the bullet and add a new set of wheels and tyres to the rebuild or just risk it and see what the mot inspector has to say ?

What you see is signs of the rubber perishing, what state is the tyre in, in places such as the side walls where you can not see?

Cracks in rubber means water gets in, meets the steel wire which means rust, reduced side wall strength etc.

+1, if they look cracked/split before you've been driving on them then they will get a lot worse after you've done a few miles on the road. Only things I would never scrimp on are tyres and brakes. Perished tyres are an accident waiting to happen:(
 
Same goes for those older tyres we have all got stashed at the back of the shed/garage/ outhouse ...

Not to mention the tyres on trailers and caravans too ...
 
as long as they are legal and safe.. ie surface crazing then it's fine. ask the mot/garage if in doubt

seen loads of tyres that look great, then you let the pressure out and you see some cracks.. it's normal.

That is why we get our tyres changed on the trailers when they start getting old. Yes plenty of tread left but not worth the potential damage/expense/casulties if things go wrong.


Now every summer caravans overturn due to old tyres. Plenty of tread left but old and tired, then made to work and oops no don't want to work/bang.

I think I read some where that tyres need changing every six years. All tyres now have a month and year date on the side of them so you know how old they are. I think the date has been put on them for the last five years, but don't quote me on that, it might be longer.

Got the same model and year as mine then greyhair?! :rolleyes: Just spending more money on it to sort out the theft damage (as well as the statutory police £200 recovery fee, unrecoverable due to £200 excess) after having forked out for new brakes all round etc. pre MOT in November (that, like the gear box oil seal had been on the cards for a while anyway).
Tyres were cracked all round previous year and passed MOT but front left failed on that in December there as tread was low too now; other one was borderline but passed again so decided to replace both front tyres. If you have the money I would say replace them for the reasons given in other responses, I only held off due to money being tight and the LR not doing a great deal of mileage last year for one reason and another. It's an expense at a time when funds are low and the LRs sucking loot elsewhere but it won't have to be done again for a good while, save you a retest fee as well maybe. I'll be replacing both back tyres due to cracking as soon as possible but will keep them still as spares as the tread's not bad.
