Split charge system or Battery management system

Good evening,

We are in the midst of planning our NC500 trip in August, we have our roof tent fitted but yet to be used, just waiting for a free weekend. We plan on purchasing a dometic 14l fridge/cooler to run while away, this way we can keep drinks cool but also keep things like bacon for meals. I also enjoy filming our adventures so will need to charge a Drone and my go pros, all without flattening my starter battery. The question is would a split charge system be sufficient or do I need to put together a basic duel management system? New to both methods I'm afraid.

Oh and we drive a 1987 Land Rover 90 with a 300tdi if this makes a difference.

Why not This? http://projectrusty1992.blogspot.com/2018/06/ Completely stand alone and can be connected or isolated from the main circuits as you wish, big leisure battery in there and when it gets low you can just start the engine and let it charge away happily without worrying about your main starter battery ever being compromised.
 
Cheers dieseldog69, I had briefly read about fitting a second alternator, didn't expect somebody to have made kits, looks fairly simple to fit.

With regards to the leisure battery, so a 100ah battery will last 100 hours pulling 1 amp an hour? Is it as simple as that? I think for example the fridge draws 3.5 amps, we will be driving every day so I can't see any problems running this over night.
 
It doesn't work out on a strictly linear scale and it also depends how many amps you draw as to how many AH you get get out of it, Google is your friend on that one though
You should never drain a lead acid battery completely, the common rule of thumb is no more than 50%
 
Id go for a split charge system that way you wont need the engine running to charge/power your goodies.

Durite do a good system (i had some minor issues but my own fault in the end) and its fairly cheap and easy to install.

Ive got an Exide marine battery 95ah which is my aux battery. That ran my Bearmach 40L fridge at 2c through France/Spain in 30c heat. The 110 was off overnight and not run for a couple days. Didnt have a flat battery!

I would suggest a battery monitor though @gstuart pointed me to the BM2 battery monitor which is bluetooth and links to your phone. Very useful so far.

Also will have two voltmeters on the dash to keep an eye while driving.

glad it was useful , must admit so handy and saves having to mess around with not having to lift the bonnet

Thanks for all the information, will read these over the weekend. pretty sure the split charge system is the way to go, sorry last question, will i need an uprated alternator?

I installed a T max split charge system, but have a D3 , which are extremely power hungry

the members here will indeed guide u better than myself when it comes to fitting a split charge system into a fender

also please don’t ever worry about how many questions u ask, even if u think there daft as indeed there’s never a daft question

Cheers, I haven't indulged much into electronics before, i am quite happy tinkering around with the mechanicals which is partly why i got a 90 but always love learning new things.

I had a D3 for around 7 months before getting the 90, if im honest i loved it, it did everything i needed it too and more (with ease). My wife and I went up to the lake district with a young puppy and we could have turned round the same day and drove all the way back it was that comfortable, but growing up i always had an itch for an older Land Rover. So i went from a D3 to a 1987 90, quite a big jump :)

I am based in Rochester.

The last thing I would buy is a kit.

I did one in my series for a fraction of the cost by buying the parts individually. Been good for the last few years. Total was around £30 if memory serves. Have a bit of a look round for wiring diagrams and a cost effective relay. Its quite a simple circuit and if you dont need the emergency start option the cabling is very cheap indeed.
