Speedo Drive

My speedo failed a while back on my 84 90CSW, today I took the dash off and found that the connection of the speedo just pops on...
I drove the landy and proved the cable was not turning. I took the cable out of the box connection and turned it manually and it's ok. I checked the shaft in the G'box and thats ok. So I'm thinking the end of the cable or the g'box shaft are damaged. The "tip" of the cable looks broken off although it is still about 2" long.
Questions, how long is the end of the speedo cable (G'box end) supposed to be?
To reconnect the dashboard end are u supposed to simply push the connector on?
If there is a bit of broken seedo cable in the G'box drive how would I remove it!!!!

Think I've got a photo of it all some where I'll go an have a look. The cable is just a clip on fit at the speedo head.

If anybody has the same trouble I have had, the small gear/shaft can be cheaply replaced on the G'box, should be able to do it without removing the prop and brake drum. Cost me £4 for a new one and £5 for a half speedo cable at Devon 4x4.

More news! After going to work on the landy today I was supprised to find the fault causing the speedo to fail. When I bought the landy it came with it's old "faulty" speedo.....Turns out the old speedo is working fine and it was the fault I just found causing the trouble all along....
The speedo cable inner was "slipping" too far into the speedo drive on the gearbox, I compared a new cable to the old ones length and they are the same. So all I did was make a small packing shim to fit into the speedo drive to stop the cable slipping in to far. Presto, cost nothing to repair as it turned out!
Anybody need a speedo for a 90 with 21000 on the clock?????
