Strange question:

Does anybody know if the speedo in p38's reads over, or under at 30mph??

I had a gatso flash me and my speedo said 30mph.
Something's not right here???

As far as I am aware, most, if not all manafacturers calibrate their speedo's to about 10% under the correct speed, so in theory, if your speedo said 30 then you were more than likely to have been doing about 27mph, also, the cameras have a bit of lee-way in them, most allow you to go through at least 10 mph + 10% over the limit, so again, you should be ok about 43mph.
This would all go out the window if you had larger wheels though, as this would make your speedo incorrect.

Stuart.

The old rule used to be 15% of the speed limit. The calibration of the police kit was to within 10% but they added an extra 5% to remove any doubt.

so in a 30mph limit you used to only be pulled if you were over about 35mph
at 70mph you should only get pulled over 80. Don't quote me on that.;)

The easiest way to check is to use or borrow someone's GPS and get your passenger to check it's readout against what you call on your speedo. That way you don't get pulled for playing with your GPS whilst driving! :D

Probably a dodgy camera. I was flashed by one in France the other day and I was doing exactly the speed limit too. If you do happen to get a FPN, query it and ask for the photos. You can work out your speed using the two photos and the marks on the road.

Only 1 in 10 cameras on mainland UK have film in them and 3 out of 10 are fakes. SO chances are..........Your fine!!

Otherwise, ask for evidence. I have GPS on 18's Hurricanes and the speedo is almost bob on, if you run 22's then I can imagine it might be closer to 35!!

if it flashed twice you have been done, if once its either not online (digital ones) or no film, and warns you to slow down.

as i understand it, all pictures should be crossed checked by a human bean before sent out, so that they pick up if a scamera has gone off incorrectly.

a friend got flashed by one once near his place, when he phoned to complain they had received 45 calls in 2 hours, so they knew it was faulty, give them a shout.

lastly i was reliably informed that the leeway used at the forces discretion (so they don't have to) is 10% plus 2mph, so 30mph should be ok until you hit 35.

hope that helps.

not quite right old fella, the correct leeway is 10% on top of your speed ie:33 in a 30, 44 in a 40 etc. anything over that is at the forces discretion. here in north wales we have cameras flash over 33 so if you are doing 34 you will get done, but then our chief constable is the mad mullah of the traffic taliban ;)

it must be different force to force then as the guy i talked to is essex traffic (friend of a work colleague), and he said 10% + 2 at discretion. he did caveat though, as you may get more leeway on a half empty motorway and next to none in a residential area. i specifically asked him about this and a couple of other things as well, i guess he took as read i realised he only meant essex. still the range rover is too thirsty to push my luck anyway :)
