Good morning everyone,
I have the following question. My P38A was built in 09/1998 - already the facelift model with Bosch.
I want to remove the sound insulation to repair it - animals have eaten holes in it. It looks terrible - the fibres are hanging down.
Is the sound proofing in my model contaminated with asbestos?
I haven't found any information on this.
I only know that it was used in the earlier models.
Thank you! BG

I don't know.
But, white asbestos was banned in 1999, which i understand is not the bad stuff. The blue was banned in 1985?
'in general' car manufacturers stopped using asbestos in the 1980s

In my unprofessional opinion, there's no dangerous asbestos in the bonnet liner. But that doesn't mean you should take it inside and give it a good beating so you can breathe the dust in.

Thanks for the feedback.
Now I have the following consideration.
My car was first registered in France -1999.
Asbestos has been banned in France since 1996 - so it is actually impossible that the P38 from 1998 still has asbestos, isn't it? Otherwise it would not be allowed to be authorised in France.
A binding statement from LandRover would of course be helpful, but I can't find anything.
Thank you!

You could just wear a mask and remove it, or bond aluminum foil to the surface to seal it. I'm pretty sure there is no asbestos in there, I have one that has been extensively eaten and it doesn't look like asbestos to me but I'm no expert.

It's probably mineral wool based as that's good for sound and heat insulation. Many eu/uk car manufacturers were phasing out asbestos in early 90s. From what I've read.

When I was young around 1981 I worked in a factory that made under bonnet insulation panels for cars and lorries. All of them were made using damp resin fibreglass and cloth and hot pressed to mould them. I suspect they are all made from those materials.

Thanks for the information! That's reassuring!

It looks like this - the white fibers worry me.
