Sound System advice please....

Like a muppet I put this in wrong section so i'll try again


I have decided to enter the Snowball Rally 2010 in aid of the Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, rather than using the normal run of the mill cars I've decided to use my Land Rover Defender 90 TD5 (abliet toy'd with by Td5 Alive)

But this is where I need help....................

Would like to hear from anyone whos installed a decent stereo / multi media system without mutilating the interior at a reasonable cost, what have you installed and hows does it sound, what problems did you encounter?

i have a good quality sony head unit (although 6 years old now and about 5 vehicles later) and a pair of infinity kappa 6x9 in wooden speaker boxes on the rear arches either side of the back door. In the front doors there are a pair of 4" square pioneer speakers probably circa 1980! which sound better than any component speaker i have bought so far! All these are wired with good quality thick speaker cable. I must say although not massively bassy it does sound bloody good. much better than our standard 07 plate 110 at work. the sound is crystal clear and only starts distorting at around 25, and the volume only goes up to 30!
by the best speakers you can afford with the best cable you can find it makes a big difference. Having the rear speakers in boxes helps a lot too it improves the sound.
speakers were £70 a few years ago and the boxes were about £20 a pair.

Or like me have a oldish upper range Alpine head unit ( had some Focus speakers left over from my old car ( didnt want to wreck a good set as my roof leaked when I fitted them ) in boxes in the back under the windows and a fly active sub rachet strapped to my dog guard sounds good .
Will e fitting more when I get round to it but that wont be for a while .

Really appreciate the info

I did pop down to local Car Audio Shop but decided not to carry on once they had gone past the £1500 point and that was for head unit (Alpine) , component speakers to replace exsisting speakers plus addidtional set for the rear in roof lining (didnt want roof lining cut).

Just get some half-decent 6x9s and stick them in boxes in the boot, it works for me. I got a fantastic deal on my 6x9s, they were worth over £300 at the time, but I got them for £60 because the company ****ed me over so much previously.

Just built this in the back of mine it includes 2 x 6x 9's, 2 x amps, 1 x Sub & all the cabling neatly hidden inside it. Put a Sony Ipod compatible head unit in the front and put the Ipod shuffle in the ashtray as it fits perfectly length ways. The sound is great and has a real meaty kick to it and the added bonus is that the tub length has only been reduced by 11" (could be reduced to 9" if I wanted to) and the lid has enough space to add a storage box into it for all those small bits we have floating around in our landys.

Thanks for the pic and certainly gives me an idea, not sure i want to go to that size but there again now youve got me thinking (one hell of a sound i guess)

I got a ifor evans car transporter trailer, put my 14,500W JBL sound system, and my 6,000 ASS sound system on the back, and towed it off into essex, put an generator in the back of the landy, and pluged it all in - could be heard 5 miles away

Thoses were the days

Are those unenclosed speakers just hot glued up there on the b post???
What is the point of that?

They aren't there anymore , were just there whilst I worked out if I needed em or not. Turned out to be Not.
