Gonna treat myself to a decent Socket Set, Ive had this one for a few years nowhttps://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-200-pc-socket-and-ratchet-spanner-set-limited-edition cant fault it but have lost a few bits from it. they are out of stock now so was Looking at this one for £260 with trade card, https://www.halfords.com/workshop-t...dvanced-200-pc-socket-and-ratchet-spanner-set anyone got one of these . Not sure if I would need some of the bits in it. infact don't know what some of them are for:), mostly working on 300 Tdi engines ,

Hi looks a nice set though your probly right might not use everything it wil cover the majority' sizes on a 300 tdi also always buy the best you can afford and it will soon pay for its self enjoy

Might go far the 175 or 150 set they are all Lifetime Guarantee.
 
Halfords professional socket sets are good, although the 1/4" ratchets are crap. I've swapped my 1/4" ratchet about 5 times now. The ratchet pawl just don't seem up to the job, whereas my 1/4 Bacho ratchet has broken the sockets, rather then the ratchet pawl.
 
Hi like Nodge68 says Bahco do some nice sets mine are mainly snap on and britool what I know now prob wouldn't have gone down the snap on route there other makes out there just as good if not better some German proxxon / geodore it all depends on what you going to be using them for I've also got Halfords cannot fault them you could also look at teng going back to Bahco they do a large set with spanners about £200
 
Some good choices here but at the end of the day it's down to personal preference and what works unfortunately gone are the day where you can see the tools in the shop before you buy to get the feel for them now you have to order on line and hope for the best at lease with the Halfords range you can observe what your going to purchase though if I was going to replace mine I'd seriously look into the bahco and what I need extra would buy individual as an when required hope we've helped
 
+1 for having a look at Bahco kits. I have both Halfords Advanced and Bahco stuff and the Bahco is nicer, doesn’t cost too much more either. Bahco sockets are all hex, Halfords are all bi-hex (apart from their 1/4” stuff).

I’m not sure if they still do tbh, I think they do. The set I bought many years ago has a lifetime warranty, but it doesn’t look like breaking anytime soon (touch wood). Even if they didn’t come with a lifetime warranty any longer, I’d happily replace my current set with another. It’s not like the whole lot is going to break all together, so I would just replace what bits did.
 
If you break a 1/4 inch ratchet or break sockets with one you are using the wrong tool for the job.
Those big sets are a waste of money if you ask me, why buy tools you wont use?
Halfords modular trays are what I use, get the 6 point not the twelve, also get a set of deep in what ever size you require that isnt in the set.
Basically, if you arnt using them professionally just buy what you need when you need it. You wont waste your money and will be building up tools as you go along.
If you are missing bits of your current set just replace them, they dont have to be replaced with Halfords bits, a socket is a socket.

Yes makes sense I was thinking that I would probably never use a lot of the bits in the set. As I say I do have one of the sets so might go for some extra bits , not sure if they do the 6 point ones, will have a look.
 
I really rate the halfords socket set too. Had one ten years and going strong still. Although the old style case for it had its day 5 years ago, and I keep patching it.

Contrary to nobber. I like to have the full set ready waiting to go if anything comes up. Even if you break down at home or away, you may need that one tool to get you out of trouble, and cant dash off to halfords to get the tool/socket etc that you now need.

Not contrary to me at all, Im a mechanic by trade, I really do need a tool for every job. If I wasnt I would only ever have the basics that I need, pre planning to do none essential jobs would include buying the tools for that job, that way I wouldn't end up with a bunch of tools that are basically no good to me.
