Battling to get my 110 csw on the road, project was rather set back since flooding in Feb 2020 and the pandemic (sadly I hadn't much time to work on her) so the firewall is rebuilt, new clutch and flywheel with the gubbins) almost mot ready so I thought I'd chuck it in and see what comes back. A few minor issues, seal leaking, gaiter worn, wiper blade and.... this. Holes poked in the A Frame cross member. FML.

Question to you wonderful knowledgeable gurus, is this part replaceable and if not does the body really need to come off or can one just cut the floor out fix it up and install a new floor

Get in there with a grinder, flap wheel, wire brush and give the thing a clean up. It may be just in need of local welding or new bottom plate. Unless you know different. gdiproducts for a crossmember £ 165.

It is replaceable, and you don't take the body off, or cut the body in any way.

Cut the chassis legs, unbolt the crossmember from the tub, put the new crossmember on the body, and over the stubs of the chassis legs, and weld it on.

It's not the rear crossmember, it's the crossmember that the A frame bolts onto.
 
So that's a no to just cutting the floor of the tub out and replacing after job is done then and body off XD Christ

No point. Most of the welding will have to be done under where the wheel boxes are.

Removing the body is not a bad job, just a lot of unbolting, and you will need several people to help you lift the body on a 110.
 
Best go find the manual section for removing the rear body then, just about finished rebuilding the front of the bloody thing.

I'll have a good look this weekend hopefully (true to form this goes down when one is injured) on whether the whole thing is shot or if i can get away with the bottom panel for now, it looks to be good on the edges where it mounts to chassis and on top as best I could see from a quick visual.

With my series 2a gearbox crossmember I cut off the lower plate an inch up the side and re plated the bottom. Turned out I had a bit of a cheat for RTV trials with a skinny crossmember.:oops::D
 
So I've had more of a look and I think it can be repaired. Mainly I confess because a mate of mine who spent many years fixing ones that squaddies broke has had a look and agreed to take it on :D

Check inside the mud trap area , mine was very rotten. Pic attached.

It was wasn't it fair play. Mine don't look anything like as bad as that thankfully but I will have a more detailed look at them to be sure :)
 
Top prize for dumbest bit of chassis design I have ever seen.o_O Number one target for my oil spray gun.
There are several others on a Defender chassis which could compete for the prize.
The internally welded plates, with rust from new and no possible way to get rust proofing between the plates, ever, comes pretty close.
