Snapped bolts and re-fitting the manifold...

Right... about a year ago when I knew fook all about land rovers I had to change the thermostat for some reason, can't remember why. The thermostat casing hadn't been off for years, got two bolts and had a problem with the last one, did eventually get it out, didn't think anything more of it until I wound the fooker back in and it snapped off.. then I did something really stupid.... spent about two days trying to get it out with a stud extractor and snapped the tip of the stud extractor off..!

Anyway, its still there, filed it flat, slapped a load of gasket stuff round it and put the casing back on with two bolts and its been fine but obviously needs sorting out... So anyway, the exhaust is on its way out and the manifold needs re-fitting but you can probably guess what the studs are like holding it on!

So.. what do you think I should do..? Don't touch anything and keep spraying the manifold studs with wd40 till the exhaust falls off... or have the head off and get it converted to unleaded at the same time?

Either way I don't know what to do so hopefully some of you might!

see if yu can get a cheap leadfree compatable head. - is the defender 2.5 petrol the same as a 2.25? - that way yu can swap heads over.

do you mean the bit wur the manifold joins the downpipe? if so they should have brass nuts on em and they int gonna sieze together. if they havn't got brass nuts then if you do snap em its best to drill them out and re-tap the thread.

No, where the manifold fits to the engine, are they bolts or studs of some sort? I dont think the others are brass where the manifold joins the downpipe, they maybe but if they snap they snap and re-thread like you suggest. Just wanted to try and avoid snapping anything else off in the head unless I just replace it if I can hold of lead free head like MHM says..

Does anybody know the answer to that 2.5 and 2.25 question?

next question has gotta be why are you taking the manifold off?
if you really need to take its off use lots of pentrating oil, leave it fer about a day to soak reet in , then use some heat on em. that coupled by gentle back and forth movment of yer spanner or ratchet is usually enough to get them off.

I know what you mean, that's why I've left the thermostat casing alone while its not leaking...!

I can't say I'm keen on the idea of taking it off at all but it's blowing a bit and if im doing the exhaust I might as well have the manifold off and refit/re-seal it..

aye thurs about the only reason yerd wanna take it orf. just lots of penetrating oil and lots of patience. little nibbles back and forth on the nuts should do the trick or just bite the bullet, snap em off and drill out any you break.
