My 2.5 DSE 1996 P38 (119,000 miles) is occassionally blowing exhaust smoke, (the dirty diesel kind). Can't pin down precisely when or what circumstance causes it but will blow it when first started sometimes and again sometimes when accelerating hard (to over take bicycle/mum pushing pram etc!).
Engine runs ok though and always starts on first turn of the key.

Any one got any ideas as to the cause/s, (injectors or what ever) or what to do to diagnose, short of asking RR engineer and risk deep intake of breath through clenched teeth accompanied with much expenditure  .

does it have a performance chip upgrade?

if it does then dont worry its normal.

if it doesnt then it may be that your injectors need a refirb. ( not too expensive if you find the wright place to do it).
or it may be that your diesel injector pump is on its way out.

for example there is a diaphram behind the pump that stops engine oil entering the pump.
if this diaphram is knackered then engine oil mixes with the diesel and you get the odd burst of ****ty fuel.

A fefirbed bosch diesel pump will set you back 400 quid installed from graham hoggs in sheffield ( my local diesel pump experts)>

good luck and keep in touch with this one:confused:
