Hi All,

Seems like I am having to do something or another on the Wife's Freelander on nearly a weekly basis. Damn thing!!

She has just come in and said 'car is smoking like crazy when pulling away'

I can't remember, but can someone maybe refresh my memory what are the main things to check first when trying to resolve a smoking Freelander.

It does get through a lot of oil, but the smoking problem has only just started happening.

Could it be the crank case breather, as that has not been done for about 18 months?

Thanks

are you burning oil what model is it what have you looked at allready:)

It is burning oil. The wife checked the oil earlier and it was way low. She topped the oil up and it is leaking oil. There is a big patch of oil on the driveway. Just wondering what could be causing the car to smoke badly (from the exhaust) and oil to be leaking out. I can't see where it is leaking from at present as the belly pan obscures the view. it definately is not because it has been over filled with oil.

Any pointers welcomed as I am getting worried this one might be terminal

Thanks

Check for splits/tightness of clamps on your turbo/intercooler/egr hoses hope thats all it is  the td4 has a oil cooler , has that pipe split , if the breather is blocked oil comes out of the dip stick !

when you say crank case filter I presume you have a td4 yes they need changing at least every 12000 or 12 months in my book also have you had the engine cover off and is the offside (drivers side ) bolt missing as I stupidly did a few months back , also check the turbo hoses for black smoke coming out . hope this helps

Thanks chaps. You have given me some things to look at. I will take the belly tray off tomorrow morning and jack it up.

I will check to see whether the oil is coming out of the dipstick.

I will report back tomorow

The crank case filter did look very dirty. There was oil still in the vehicle as I have just drained the remainder out. I am just crossing my fingers that the oil came out of the dipstick and hasn't blown a seal.

Will replace the crank case filter later and refill will oil. If it still smokes then I will deduce that I have buggered a seal when the oil pressure in the crankcase became too high?

I am surprised the vehicle does not have a pressure relief valve like my central heating system so that in the event the oil pressure get's too high it just escapes from the valve rather than potentially blowing a seal somewhere causing £££ of damage.

It would worthwhile doing the bmw breather mod , as the filters clog if left , plenty of info on here about it !

I have just put the BMW breather mod in, new air filter, oil and oil filter. It is smoking so heavily that I think something is very wrong. I drove it up the shared drive and then stopped. It is smoking so bad that there is no way I can take it for a drive on the main road.

Just wondering how I can deduce where the oil is being burnt. I assume it could be oil leaking into the cylinders or leaking into the turbo charger?

ANy pointers welcomed here as I was really hoping replacing the crank case breather would have sorted the issue.

Thanks

Sorry to here that , if the engine sounds normal , and theres no visible oil leak , and you have changed the oil , maybe it needs a good blast down the road to clear it ? See what other members have to say :)

When you rev the vehicle it sounds lumpy and very agricultural. Sounds like its knocking. The revs also don't pick up quickly. What ever is happening, oil is going somewhere where it should not be.

How can I check whether the turbo seals has gone.
