Been and bought a series 3 for my daughter its a 2.25 diesel solid chassis bulkhead original mileage at 87k its a 1984 and the owner told me its a 5 bearing engine, it drives spot on goes well when wound up on a flat but drove it today and my god does it smoke and it stinks terrible

accelerating it chugs out a black/grey smoke that stinks my mate followed me and had to shut his window he said it make him feel sick lol

when going downhill the smoke changes to blue smoke and i noticed as soon as you use the 4wd say low range it just chugs a constant trail of blue smoke but it doesnt smell?

the landy runs mint starts 1st time and sounds pukka just the smoke is now worrying me any ideas???

i got pretty much the same problem with mine exept the street dissapears behind mine

so far ive fully refurbished me cylinder head with new seals throughout reground the valves and decoked it a new head gasket tried running it with new injectors with no difference so im now getting ready to replace the piston rings and hone the cylinders out just to make damn sure it aint anything on the block before forking out for a new distribution pump

one remark though since doing the head it runs a lot smoother and quieter with a fair bit more poke on the wind up ( dunt arf pick her feet up in 3rd from chug to 35 mph )

Performance wise its spot on in fact my mate has a 2.5 na defender and theres not much in them, the engines, quiet for a diesel im just not sure where to start, the smells more annoying its like melting wax or a bbq lol

got that sort of parraffin smell itll be the timing on the fuel pump wich is trial and error tweaking it

the thing that makes me think its my rings is when its sat idling and i remove the oil breather hose from between the top of the rocker cover and the inlet manifold it throws lots of smoke out of there and hardly any out of the exhaust like its pressurising the crank case ;);)

It seems tricky to get them to run just right. Mine starts well, runs quiet and is clean when going along, aside from a slight puff of smoke when you load the engine from a standstill (junction etc) which is to be expected. Mine smokes a little at idle blue-ish to black I would say and smells of parafin. Tickover is possibly a notch high too.
It's amazing how many military Wolfs smoke too. I was following a couple down the motorway the other day and one was fairly smokey unless on the overun from what i could tell
