Here I am again. With the new fuel pump and filter I fit last week my Freelander is running much better than before. Of course, one issue resolved often reveals another.
This time the engine revs fine at low rpm and fine at high rpm, all the way to red line. However, at 2000rpm a slight stutter can be felt and I get white/blue smoke pouring from the exhaust. This continues up to 3000rpm, beyond which the engine runs smooth again and the smoke stops.
I tried pulling off the vacuum hose to the EGR valve and it made no difference at all. I was wondering before, and even more so now, if the thing is even working. It was not that dirty at all when I stripped it off a couple of weeks back, certainly compared to some photos I've seen from others... more wet oil than carbon deposits. Perhaps it's stuck closed? Regardless, it doesn't seem to be the cause of this issue... unless this can be a symptom of a stuck EGR?
I've also tried disconnecting the MAF sensor. Boom! Major improvement in how the engine picks up, so the thing very clearly needs cleaning or replacing. I'll be buying some of those stupid fancy "security" torx bits at the first opportunity to get that done. However, it again did nothing to resolve this problem.
I did a search and found some threads here mentioning a similar issue, but not one that provided a definitive cause or fix. Feel free to link if I've missed something, or any ideas you guys have would be appreciated.
