Slack steering on my Disco 2!

Hi folks,

I'm looking for some advice.

The steering on our Disco has gone weird... by which I mean that there is now significant slack/play in the steering wheel before the steering responds.

It's been fine up till the last few weeks.

Any hints as to what it might be, and more importantly do I need to book it in immediately or is it safe to drive?

I don't want to be in the situation where the steering suddenly fails! Is this likely?

p.s. Happy to have a go at fixing it myself if it's just an adjustment that's necessary - but I've not got time for a more involved fix. I just want want to know whether I should tell me wife to stop driving it!

BTW, it drives ok and is usable, I'm just worried about whether it could suddenly fail and what the consequences might be.

get someone to rock steering wheel whilst you hold the drag link and track rod in turn you will feel any play and where it is, also rock steering shaft just before the box again by hand and feel for play in box before drop arm moves
