So, my Series (2a, 109 doosel) has a bit of a slack slap in the drivetrain and quite a noisy overdrive. I lucked across a couple of very good condition (I think one was recently reconditioned) diffs, have fitted them along with new props front and rear and inspected and repacked the bearings.

I was thinking of fitting the Ashcroft high ratio transfer case so I could remove the overdrive and have nice new bearings. But they're out of stock until the end of February.

Is there much I can do on the transfer box in situ? I'm taking the Landy up to a mate's barn next week to give the chassis a bit of attention and want to have a go at it then...

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Fitting the Ashcroft high ratio transfer box gives around 28% difference. This is similar to overdrive and not to far away from 3.54 Rangie diffs at around 25%. The question is your diesel 2.25? I tried 3.54 diffs on mine and soon went back to 4.7s even in good condition the 2.25 struggled with "driveability". Lots more third gear work not nice on a worn box like mine. I would stick to the overdrive then you can up the gearing as required. Diffs or transfer box are permanent and you are stuck with them.

I hear what you're saying divie. I don't know if I've got a particularly decent doosel but it pulls fine with the overdrive in, I could drive around all day with it. And that's with the timing chain being slack too! The only issue I can foresee is when I've got a ton of logs on the back and have to go up a particularly steep hill - but then I've got the low ratio box and anyone behind will just have to wait! ;)

What I'm after answers on is where there might be slack in the drivetrain right now...

Slack in the drive train ? A few things to think about, Handbrake output effort loose ?
How much back and forth play on rear diff when checked at flange ? Gearbox mainshaft nut loose ? ( I have made a batch of mainshaft nut tools Free to loan all I ask is £20 deposit to ensure they come back for the next person to use, postage around £5.60)
Gearbox/engine mountings ? Finally are the new props tight ? I have seen a few loose on fixing bolts.
