Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative motor for the old SJ?
I'm looking for something that wouldn't require too many modifications but
provide similar performance to the old 1300 lump. We have lots of old jap
hatchbacks over here in NZ but not many donor SJs.
Alternatively, how big a job would it be to fit new rings & valve guides?
The old girl has 300,000km on the clock and dumped all of her oil & water
last night (blown head gasket I assume) but burnt a fair bit of oil prior to
that. I don't want to do anything crazy to the car but reducing the oill &
water consumption would be a start.

Ford Xflows and Pinto's can be made to fit using the Ford gearbox, the same is
true of RWD Vauxhalls ( not sure if you get those, if you do I would guess whey
would have a Holden bage on them)

Other options are Suzuki Swifts or Vitara and I have heard of people using
Toyota engines.

Simon Barr.
1.7i Lada Niva Cossack, going, going...
110 300Tdi coming soon.

Datsun 120Y and 140Y are also very good transplants along with the Datsun
SSS. Motors slip into the original mountings with very little fettling and
if I remember correctly there isnt a lot to do on the bellhousing either.

So does that mean that the Swift engine is a direct swap?

BTW spare V8s tend to end up in jetboats not Suzukis - don't ask me why,
it's a kiwi thing!

The whole engine no, however the block is basically the same.

You could fit the whole Swift engine tho you would have to customise the exhaust
manifold, ideal for on road use not so good off it as it suffers from oil
starvation to the head on anything other then a flat surface.
